ive been told by my isp that they only support windows..not linux.
which is weird considering lots of the net itself runs on linux.
yet ive heard there are in fact some cdn linux users on the net.
thus confoosed..lol.
preferably i would like to run a linux live cd from my dvd drive.
is anyone in canada useing a linux live cd distro on the net. ??
if so..what isp do you use ??
ive always been interested in linux//played with it on occasion in the past...
and finally it looks like its reaching a level of maturation via various distros.
frankly huge bloated distros dont interest me. its a quirk of mine..lol.
also any live distro run off a dvd drive recommends would be helpfull..

Knoppix bootable CD works well here, but I am on the other side of the border (barely)
As you know - 'supporting' can be much different than using it. I would be surprised if Linux didn't work with your ISP; but I wouldn't be surprised if their default homepage loaded differently or certain featues didn't work easily...
You know computers well enough to know that 'supporrting' an OS is different than allowing it to be used.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Go to any store with computer mags and pick up a Linux Mag with a distro on DVD in it. There are versions intended for audio work, with a suite. No matter what they say, it just works. Heck, some new atom processors with Linux a gig of memory a 160 gig hard drive are selling now for under $150. 190 if you want Windows XP.
I have 3 distros, and my old laptop with the dead battery is hooked to the high def TV and I have a remote keyboard and mouse and sit in my armchair and run linux most of the time I'm on here.
It's getting better and easier all the time. You can download something that runs on a jump drive, or put it on your hard drive. Be careful if you dual install it, even on a removable hard disk, it has a routine called GRUB that allows you to chose to boot in Linux or Windows, and I messed that up once and the computer would reboot to Linux, but only if the external hard drive was hooked up. It was hard to fix.
I think they are talking about support. And you can put a version of Linux on some old machine, network it, and use it instead of Windows for everything but Band in a Box which is where I'm at.

thanks for the reply folks.
i have various desktop drives hooked up via usb to the main pc.
so an alternative instead of the dvd live dance would be to put the distro
on one of the usb drives for ease.
am aware of knoppix..got an old copy here i need to update.
john ..a question. who is your isp that lets you use the net with
linux mate ?? also which linux browser do you use ??

They have no idea. The latest distros just seem to figure out how to connect. There is an additional setup item as I have to put in the network password. It was intuative though the connect button on Ubuntu was on the top right.
I do not think that the host on the other end cares at all. Most companies are running some version Linux. I remember when Wendy's restaurants first came out I got the contract to ensure two restaurants systems were operating. Turned out the 'computer' was a small Motorola 68010 box running Xenix and it dialed home with sales stats once an hour. Those systems were so easy to setup it was stupid.
I'd suggest with your background you try JackLab AND a regular distro, like Ubuntu.
It's easy and opens a whole new world.
And either should run on a decent older system. Years ago it was hard to get wireless cards to work. It now just runs. I plugged an hp wireless keyboard and mouse into my Ubuntu system and it just works. Things are getting better all the time.

I dual boot Linux/Ubuntu using Linux 99% of the time. Only use Windos if the site requires IE. There browser is Firefox so there won't be any differences. In fact I'm able to copy and paste the profiles for both Firefox & Thunderbird ack and forth between Linux & Windows. I love Linux . No antimalware programs to deal with. I use their firewall to protect my network as I have dialup with no router & I also use noscript for Firefox. My little PIII 1.2 /512 Ram runs like a breeze & never, ever crashes.

Data packets are Data packets. Your ISP has no concept what OS you're using, although if you were to connect to their website, the data being sent *can* be read to see what is IN the data packets, and that includes browser, and possibly even OS, if it's included in the data.
I can't possibly see your ISP saying you can't use Linux. Might as well say you can't use a Mac, either, since the latest Mac OS is based on Unix.

The devil is in the details..
manning himself said his ISP does not *support* linux, only windows. So the issue isn't using it, the issue is only in needing support for some features his ISP may offer.

Correct. However, the context of the post would lead me to believe that his ISP not only doesn't support it, for whatever features they may have, i.e., Comcast provides McAfee Security Suite, but appears that they discourage the use of it, since he was asking if anyone else even used it, and what ISP they had.

A few comments on the softpedia list...
JackLab is no longer in development.
Musix GNU+Linux is good, but a inclination toward Spanish language instructions can be trying.
Ubuntu Studio is well supported, and contains the latest versions of all the applications. I use it because it is universally compatible with most accessory software.
LMMS is not an O/S, it's a full-feature application that is installed within your Linux O/S.
DeMuDI is no longer in development.
Dyne:bolic has not been updated since late 2007, so it's applications are dated, but it is conveniently upgradeable using it's "Dyne modules". This would be my choice of a lightweight audio O/S.
Presently, 64 Studio is the professional's choice. Very complete, and in constant development by industry experts.
StartCom looks cool - I know nothing about it.
Apodio is now based on Ubuntu, so why not just go with...Ubuntu...?
m-dist is another O/S with older versions of audio applications - I would be concerned about it's compatibility with recent software.

Thanks Oren. As I use Ubuntu mainly to support website development and testing I don't use much in the way of audio tools.
I'm lazy perhaps, but of the opinion that if the thing doesn't sound good in the room or at the gig, then why do I need to muck with it in post production and make it what it ain't. Kinda like airbrushing my face. Or wearing makup to do a video. Soon I hope to put together a demo of my developing sets, but the video work will be to fade in and out of the clips, and a bit of crazy stuff like me singing in the garage, which I'd just do with a recording of the song on my voice recorder at the right tempo so I can sort of lip synch it for the video cam.
I have a business selling risk management plans and employee manuals for bars. All that is in Ubuntu, and to be honest as a time saver and an old unix hack the manuals are in a directory and I change the company names in the headers and bodies, the addresses etc with scripts the old fashioned way.
for example (without the loop to go through the files in the directory the main line is
sed '/Company/s//New Company/g'
and so on for each change from phone number to whatever and usually I'm done, except to pdf the files and send them to the print shop via email, and pick them up.

When an ISP says "we don't support Linux" (I think) it really means "We don't know Linux".
Linux is stable. It will stay up without rebooting for months. Firefox is a dream to run.
Install scripts are much improved for different (free) programs (software other than the OS).
For a year and a half I had an old PC running Linux non stop until the hard drive gave up its ghost.
There is a learning curve if you want to understand the shell/console commands.
Much about Linux is just straight text files.
Grab a distro and install it. Then you'll know.

I had a Unix machine on ups battery backup. Ran 8 years. It was a communications hub, and after I sold the company no one shut it off. My wife (I sold her with the company), shut off the cron processes, but though it was doing something else. It was but nothing of consequence. She called me one day and asked if she needed the NCR system running in the back closet. That's when I asked her to type in uptime and hit enter. Weird. System was the size of a large book.
What I meant to say above is you do this..even in linux.
