Clearly he sees and hears it differently than most people. I heard an anecdote about Thelonius Monk which was very similar. The person interviewed stated that he heard Monk play a jazz standard note for note from sheet music and it *still* sounded like Monk. It's fascinating to me how different people can take the same instrument or the same musical elements and create something completely unique.
