Hi,
i am pretty new to this stuff.
I use Biab and RB.
With Biab i suceeded in programming the song and record one audio track with guitar.
So far so good. But how can i add another track with voice on top of it, so that i can regulate them separately?
As far as i understand, in BIab there is not option to record a second audio track.

My setting:
Laptop Windows10, via USB connected to Helix Stomp as guitar modelling amp, connected to external speaker.
In Audio settings i use ASIO driver ans Stomp as input and output device.
I do not succeed to record with a microphone plugged in Stomp, it is far too low level in RB.

What else do i need? Something like a preamp (Focusrite, Behringer Xenyx 302 USB)?

Regards
Rainer

What I do is create one of the files - lets say the guitar track.

Through the OS I navigate to the recorded file and rename it.

Then back in BIAB I record the second file - this time the voice track.

Mix all the files in a DAW - I used Audacity (freeware) until recently. Now I use Presonus Studio One Pro 5.1.

Hope this helps...

Since you have RealBand, it's easiest to to use to record your vocals. The same audio input that's working with BIAB will work in RealBand and you have many tracks available to add live recorded instruments or vocals to your song.
That said, you can do the same in BIAB if you want. It's not as visual and also a bit more tedious.

<< "As far as i understand, in BIab there is not option to record a second audio track." >>

This is a common misconception. Yes, there's only one visible audio track in the BIAB Mixer. But that one audio channel can be used over and over to record as many additional audio files as you want. Most people assume the only channel in the BIAB Mixer that can have recorded audio other than a BIAB RealTrack is the Audio Channel. No. Any of the eight BIAB Mixer Channels can have audio by simply converting any channel to an Artist Performance Track or by recording audio onto the Audio Channel and converting that audio to an Artist Performance Track and then moving the Artist Performance Track to any other available BIAB Mixer Track.

There's another method to record a second or more audio tracks in BIAB. It's called overdubbing and can be found in the Audio Recording Window when you select the Record Audio Button. This is easy to use.
Record your first track and save the take
Check the Overdub Underlying Audio Box and Record a second take. You're given the option to save or redo each take and you can record multiple passes to add your own vocal double, harmonies, Backing Vocals, new instruments, a solo - practically anything you want.

as Charlie says its much simpler and more easily seen in RealBand. Open your BIAB file, save as a seq file (finish the backing in BIAB first) choose a track and record your guitar. when you've done that choose another track and record your vocal.

with RB you can see everything you need - nothing is 'under the hood' like BIAB

Thank you, Charlie for your answer,
but overdubbing means, it is one track in the end, i cannot regulate the single records, right?
This is what i need to do, regulate the volume of the voice and guitar separately.

Charlie is an expert on BiaB and has discovered many ways to beat the so-called limits of it. He is also way over the heads of many users, including me a long time user, in how to use BiaB, IMHO. Since you have indicated that you are new to this I would strongly suggest that you do your backing tracks in BiaB, load them into RB, then do your recordings there. It is much easier then Charlie's advanced method IMHO.

No offense to you Charlie. You are a master of BiaB for sure.

Thanks Charlie. I wasn't aware of BIAB's ability to record audio on multiple tracks.

I don't think it records multiple tracks, it just records the new track over top of the existing track.
They then become a single track, not multiple tracks.

To OP:
As previously mentioned Realband is made for this and comes with BiaB.
Try it.
Open your BiaB file in Realband and record 30 more tracks if you want, all separate.

You're correct. In this instance, the BIAB program automatically merges and mixes the tracks and that's giving up too much control for many users. The method described by Deb (DSM) above is a better method if you do the recording in BIAB rather than in RB.

Thanks for your kind words Mario. Your work with MIDI in BIAB sets the standard for me as I'm only versed in audio. Certainly I've taken no offense in your recommendation to use RB because that's my suggestion too. I only went into such detail with recording audio in BIAB to answer the posters direct question about recording in BIAB.

A lot of BIAB advances and development occurred during the 90's when multi track recorders were king in small studios and home studios and a lot of multi track procedures, techniques and principles ended up in the BIAB Mixer. Since then, although software DAW's have become the standard, today, operating BIAB as a multi track recorder is in many cases, more advanced than hardware multi track recorders. There are several reasons for this. The MIDI features of BIAB, BIAB MST's and access to RealTracks and RealDrums when used with Audio and the Artist Performance Track feature really take BIAB track generating to a higher level of complexity and automation that are overshadowed by the ease, power and features of DAWs. The Artist Performance Track feature allows audio files to reside on other BIAB Mixer Channels and files are easily moved between the Audio Channel and all the other BIAB Mixer Channels. At first glance, it appears the BIAB Mixer is limited to 8 channels and only one Audio Channel to record to. Although there's only the single audio channel, it can be used over and over again by moving audio files to other BIAB Mixer Channels and converting them to Artist Performance Tracks.

lambada and Deb, with the method Deb uses to record multiple audio tracks, by using Artist Performance Tracks, you can save time and have BIAB automate the process of naming and saving files to use in your DAW. I'll be happy to give you the steps if that's something you want to try out. It's very easy once you've gone through the steps and is quite a time saver.

There's two methods. You're correct that the overdubbing from the Record Audio Menu does merge and mix multiple overdubs onto a single stereo or mono track.
Recording onto the Audio Channel and implementing moving tracks to other BIAB Mixer channels Using APT's allows a user to record as many audio tracks as desired. Even 30 is no problem...

Oh i am really overwhelmed by your kind support....

actually, if possible, i would prefer to stay in Biab and create multiple tracks there. Biab just runs more stable on my system than RB.

So, if there is a way to "record multiple audio tracks, by using Artist Performance Tracks" as mentioned above, i would be happy to try that

I tend to cloud things when I write out the steps providing more information, theory and background than necessary to just record audio. Just understand that the ability to record multiple audio tracks using the Artist Performance Tracks is only a single benefit and feature of many benefits and features Artist Performance Tracks open up to users of BIAB.

I'll start by giving a link to a video to how to record audio and the Artist Performance Track by PG Music. It's demonstrated on a MAC but works the same on a Windows PC.
Recording Audio and using the Artist Performance Track

The video shows one APT being created on the Melody Track but since the Soloist Track is also available, the technique could be repeated by recording another audio track and moving that audio to the Soloist Track and freeing the BIAB Mixer Audio Channel to record a third part.... It's not limited to one or two tracks using this method. It can be repeated many times.

Give it a try and I'm glad to answer any questions you or anyone has.

Great for adding vocal harmonies. I had no idea. The video is super useful. I hope PC version is as functional as the Mac version. If you can add midi, I guess you could add midi performance commands as well such as turning on or off your vocal processor if you wanted to.

right now i have a new issue:

i can record the audio track, i can keep the track, i can play it with all the rest.

Now i move it to a performance track, it appears there, but the track is empty, no sound at all.

What could cause this?
