IN EAR EARBUDS.
i'm going to be doing a lot of song mixing, and obviously i'm aware that lots of people listen to songs on a range of earbuds. everything from dollar store ones up to expensive ones.
thus its a challenge to mix for everything.
i have already high end headphones. no need for more , but what i need preferably is recommendations for under 30 buk in ear earbuds, so that a mix can stand up on various earbuds ,
from downright awfull sizzly types to higher end, so i wont feel like a dope. lol.
how do other people handle this challenge ??
also there are so many earbuds. goodness , on amazon there are a ton of them.
i'm looking for long cord also.
ones that also arent sizzly, nice full sound range.
its difficult i know. there are so many recommendations on
google.

I have some earbuds that I like a lot, but I don't use them for mixing. I've used them once or twice to record but not to mix.
For mixing, I recommend monitor speakers or a good set of headphones. You are simply not going to get the transparency and crisp highs or solid lows from buds. Headphones are not ideal for mixing but they are much better than buds. I listen to music with buds and I believe the model is the Creative EP 630. Amazon for about $20 a pair.

I’ve found with our KRK monitors (after some experience with them) I can mix in a manner that will sound good, at least to me, on our “big” system with a sub, in our vehicle with a sub and on my Apple buds. The mix may appear to be lacking in some aspects on the monitors but I’ve learned how certain settings will sound on our other systems. For me using a reference song and, as mentioned, listening on other systems as an additional reference works. But as always YMMV.

Never thought to use earbuds for mixing - I've always used monitors or headphones. Very curious what kind of feedback will be posted here.

As others have mentioned, I'd suggest using proper monitors or studio headphones for the bulk of the mixing, and use the earbuds to "check" it to make sure it sounds good there.
For earbuds themselves, see if you can get a pair of the Apple ones included with iPhones, as they're very common, relatively decent, and you might have some friends who hate them but keep them in the closet "just in case" (like me). Yes I know, you'll have to find an older set with a normal 3.5mm headphone jack, not the new Lightning ones...

i DO have pretty decent monitor speakers.
the issue is some mixes that are done on pro monitors or
soffit monsters, even done by pro audio engineers in big studios can fall off on cheap stuff.
hence why big studios use "auratones" etc.
thus its a real challenge.
i dont classify myself as a super mixdown audio engr.(songwriter / vocallist.)
i just do my best like everyone else.
its just that so many people listen over cheap earbuds these
days.
but keep any brand ideas coming please.

Referencing a thread from earlier this year. The goal is to try and get a flat frequency response in your listening environment. Your speakers, headphones, the room you are listening in all impact this. If you can get a good flat response, a mix that sounds good should do so anywhere. There are software solutions to try and balance your mixes better. mixing thru headphones ? ? ?

the problem is the listeners listening environment has changed.
i dont know anyone who once had fancy expensive hi end hi fi stereo systems useing them anymore.
put it down to the celphone/tablet phenom.
maybe the odd person here and there uses one.
but if you go down the street in any city , everyone is bopping to earbuds.
same in peoples homes.
the other conundrum is ive known people use very hi end studio monitors to mix on, in wonderfull control/mix rooms, but the mix might not translate to lower end playback systems.
and these people ive known in the past were very very experienced. would put me in the shade
experience wise.
thus its very difficult for us mere mortals. lol.
try a well recorded classic song on dollar store buds .
sadly thats what a lot of people listen on these days.
i call them "sizzlers". lol.
its a shame really. creators put so much effort into high
quality product , only to be listened to on sizzlers.

I fully agree with you justanoldmuso - I can't stand the thought that my mixes will be mostly listened to on a MONO phone speaker of all things, let alone junk earbuds or a car stereo with the bass cranked to 12!
Part of it is I can't stand earbuds - I have fairly small ears so they tend to just hurt. I haven't owned earbuds in at least a decade, except for the free ones Apple gives me whenever I get a new phone! I use my HR824's for most of my mixing, then check it on my ATHM50's, my 40 year old hifi system, the built in speaker in my Mac Pro, my car stereo (which is stock Pontiac and appropriately terrible), and finally the phone speaker. I usually get very good results making sure it sounds good on the studio monitors, and mixes end up translating well on "lesser" systems.

Somehow I don’t think the vinyl craze folks are listening on buds  It depends on your “market” — I know a LOT of folks of varying ages who listen on new and vintage audio systems. Nowadays we can all choose our music bubble to live in and in our Americana rootsy bubble many folks are indeed listening via their mobile device ... but streaming it to a good home or car system. I mean no disrespect to the massive earbud crowd and am only mentioning that there are many other albeit smaller crowds who listen via buds only when no other option is available. Like us when we are mountain biking! Bud

i had the same ATH's, they retired on me through overuse lol.
people can disagree with me if they wish "but", one has to be vewy vewy carefull bout monitoring systems. a lot is marketing,
imho. remember those 60's worldwide classic hits ??
do some deep research what the studios used back then.
i'm a fancy monitoring system sceptic i guess.

The sound quality from vinyls are incredible considering how long ago they were produced. When I was doing my hospital radio shows I used vinyl for all of them. At home, my buds are plugged into my Bose pc speakers. Their sound is rich and clear. Cannot fault them

I use in-ear monitors when I play live, but for mixing, no. Good near field monitors will give you a far better representation of what people are going to hear driving in their car. In ears tend to be "tuned" for the sound to travel 1 inch from the output point to your eardrum where those vibrations become sound.
