Here's my latest track.
It's almost finished but is waiting on a local guitarists to drop his lead parts on it.
In the meantime I've tweaked away and need OTHER EARS.
BIAB provided the drums, RockClassicBritEv^7Tom, and organ, 686OrganB3BackgroundPopEv120.
Verses in A maj & choruses in F maj.
With the drums I took a page from Mike Leander's tracking processes for Rock N Roll Parts 1 & 2...he used to do a full kit drum track and then do the kick n toms again. The slight timing differences added to the extra bottom end gave it a two drummer sound without the timing issues that are more evident in the cymbals n snare.. Something the Glitter Band achieved live with two drummers.
I duplicated the track, aggressively filtered out anything above the toms and added a 100% wet tiny delay on the 2nd version and blended them together.
Guitars are Squire Mustang HH through a Marshall.
bass is a Vantage through a BDI21.
ANY suggestions or ideas gratefully received...

LYRICS
IN THERE SOMEWHERE

Reason with the logic rhyming riddles for a song
But the words don’t come together something definitely went wrong
The smiling clown went away for good to the circus, city, sewer
He was running out of lives & his mask was so much truer
He was running out of life & the options are fewer

There is no rhyme or reason
For feeling like you do
No, no definite rhyme or reason
But the focus is on you.
So come my bleeding jester
Entertain the gawking crowd
No definite rhyme or reason
Just the voices getting loud

The man was in there somewhere beneath his rhyme there was no reason
His façade would someday crumble his humour was his treason
& they laughed at your insanity no prying eyes to look inside
But their laughter was inanely aimed at the mask in which you hide
But their laughter was inane again, as they line up to take a side

There is no rhyme or reason
For feeling like you do
No, no definite rhyme or reason
But the focus is on you.
So come my bleeding jester
Entertain the gawking crowd
No definite rhyme or reason
Just the voices getting loud

There is no rhyme or reason
For feeling like you do
No, no definite rhyme or reason
But the focus is on you.
So come my bleeding jester
Entertain the gawking crowd
No definite rhyme or reason
Just the voices getting loud

I'm not much use to you - I liked the track and it sounds really good to me. The drums are nice and powerful and the guitar is well recorded. Strong mix.

Look forward to hearing the finished product.

I'm not very good at critiquing other peoples mixes unless something really jumps out at me as needing attention, and nothing did on this track.

Drums sound great, which realdrums did you use for them?

Cool ending with the feedback!

Good song, I liked it.

Well, you'd know I won't be much help to you, Ray. I get most of MY help form YOU! As for the mix, I can hear every instrument and none is competing with another.

Enjoy whatever happens!

This sounds really good to my ears - if this isn't finished I'm excited to hear the end results. As it's been stated by others, it's blended nicely and no instruments seem particularly too loud or quiet.

ray,

Your drum process worked. Well. (From your description I had doubts)
Guitars sound good. Bass is nice and punchy.
Vocals sit well in the mix through the phones. Through monitors they had just a slight high-end edge to them (REALLY slight).

Good stuff.

This sounded great to me. Liked the vox and the lyrics a lot. I pay scant attention to drums. I know I should concern myself with matching the kick to the bass and stuff like that, but I just don't.

I can't find anything wrong with this mix; I can hear everything. The balance is perfect.

My question is do you really need to add a lead guitar?

Hello Rayc,
I enjoyed your lyrics without rhymes. Your chord sequence is always interesting and enjoyable. I might have liked a little more volume on the vocals but that's a detail. Well done.

Very cool Ray. I really like the effect that you put on the vocal. The driving guitars and bass really pushed the song and loved the ascending chords.

I listened a second time just concentrating on the mix. I think this mix is very good. Very good separation of the instruments. Ending was very cool.

Thanks Deryk,
I've tweaked the vocal level a little bit. I look forward to the finished product too...I assume the lead work will be a plus. Well, I hope too.

FJ,
the drum process sounds dubious doesn't it? I know it worked with an actual musician playing the two parts, the records sound HUGE, but having to filter to get a result could've been a disaster...lucky experiment really!
Thank you.

Yeah, when working with a multi track kit that's a LOT easier to do (though mixing a complete kit is a nightmare until experience kicks in).
Thanks for your kind words.

Scott the vocals are a little reverb and stacked unison parts for emphasis where needed.
Thanks for the generous assessment.
