Can anyone advise me ... if i take a playalong CD (the kind you get when you buy it with the sheet music / book), and I then record my solo along with this and then sell it, am I violating a law?

I'm no lawyer, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but...
If it's a solo that you created (not the melody), then the solo is your intellectual property. If you add it to a CD that came with the book, then that recorded accompaniment is most likely copyrighted, and so you can't sell it. Of course, if the license accompanying that CD gives you permission to, then that's different, but if that recording has signature riffs associated with the commercially available version of the song, then you're really treading thin ice.
I would just create my own BIAB arrangement of the song, record the solo, and all belongs to you (since chord progressions can't be copyrighted).

Hi
Why not take a few minutes to import the MP3 of the song in question (pre-solo), generate the chords and put together your own BIAB version of the track to which you can add the solo, and make creative chord/instrument/tone adjustments that may arise during the soloing. It could end up being a very quick and easy project. At the end of it you will have something that is both legal and yours.
Kind regards

Very well. I understand and agree with these previous posts. I'm new with BIB and it really didn't occur to me how simple it would be to create a new arrangement based on the chord progression. Thank you much. Right on track!
I have a "sub" question though ...
What if I wanted to market / advertise the fact that, "... this is my own rendition of an oldie but goodie by ..." I guess my own 'feeling' about the issue (and I'm not much on trusting that), is that I am offering a product that is BASED on the original but given that it is a 'rendition' of the original, I'm ASSuming that this informs / educates the potential buyer that they're buying an artistic 'version' -- simply a different idea of how the tune could be played or 'interpreted'.
Entirely too much to worry about I think. Nobody ever started out thinking they were going to be the next Frank Sinatra but ya' never know! Better safe than sorry I guess -- it's certainly a different technology and a lot more things to consider than when I was a young man.
Thanks again!
Ike
