Just because your monitor is not connected doesn't mean that Windows knows that it is disconnected, i.e. you have to tell Windows that the external monitor is no longer available. Doing this should solve your problems.

Only one display is available in Control Panel. Windows doesn't see that there are any other monitors at the moment.
