Hi Folks. I wanted to try something new, and to my surprise I could not figure it out. Here is the scenario: I have arrangement in place, (all RT / RD). I wanted to experiment with some MIDI percussion that are available in MIDI styles of BIAB. So... While I have my arrangement down, I open style picker to audition percussion, and the way it sounds with context of it's own style.... but how do I pull only drums out of pre-made BIAB MIDI style into my own?
I believe the "workaround" would be to open that specific midi style and swap everything except drums to originally picked RT's...
But I am sure there is an easier, more intuitive way to do this. Is there?
Misha, if I read you correctly you only want the percussion from the MIDI kit.
If this is true there are two ways to do this. If you are using a GM drum kit then yes you have to delete all of the drums, kick, snare, etc, and only keep the percussion. Using the piano roll view is the easy way to do this.
The other way is to not use a GM drum kit and to use a percussion only preset. I have a couple of Kontakt presets that I use for percussion sounds. You may have to map the GM numbers to the preset numbers to get the correct sound, but that isn't very hard, at least with my DAW Studio One Pro 5.
PS - I just though of another method and that is to look for audio loops. There are some very nice percussion audio loops available and one or two may work for you. Google/Bing percussion audio loops and you will find a number of free ones.
I hope this helps and good luck.
The bumper sticker said "I'm a veterinarian, therefore I can drive like an animal". Suddenly I realized how many proctologists are on the road.

Mario, Thank you for trying. I was probably not clear on "percussion" part. Any Midi drums from BIAB Midi only styles (or any Midi track for that matter from BIAB Midi styles) I am strictly talking about BIAB Midi only styles (not outside midi import) and how to get lines (tracks) from these into already created arrangement.
P.S. Loops are another animal, it is easy, there is a loop "picker".
Outside guess only, but do any of the options on this page restrict your use of implementing MIDI drums?
BIAB & RB2026 Win.(Audiophile), Windows 10 Pro & Windows 11, Cakewalk Bandlab, Izotope Prod.Bundle, Roland RD-1000, Synthogy Ivory, Session Keys Grand S & Electric R, Kontakt, Focusrite 18i20, KetronSD2, NS40M, Pioneer Active Monitors.
Videotrack, Thanks for trying... but I do not think this is it. We have a picker for styles. Assuming I like only a single RT track from the style, I will write down track number go to track mixer ->Select RealTrack->search by that number. Find it-> open.
How do I select a single MIDI track from BIAB midi styles to non MIDI arrangement that is already in place?
Here is exact scenario. RT arrangement is made, I do not like RealDrums in it. I go to StylePicker to audition MIDI styles and I find MIDI drums in MIDI style that will fit my non MIDI arrangement. How do I import just that drum line? See attached.
If I understand your issue, which I think I do because this has been raised here several times over the years, then I have good news and bad news for you.
Good news is there is a way to resolve this issue. There is a sequence of menu options which will permit you to insert a new midi instrument from a midi style into your exclusively real track song.
Bad news is this a very tricky operation which once it has been explained, is soon lost in comprehension. I remember it was addressed by Andrew in the not too distinct past (over a year ago).
If I needed to do this now, I would send an email to support with attention to Andrew and remind him that he outlined how to do this in the past.
Have you tried the style maker? I have used it to add midi instruments (in their style pattern) to a style with only RTs. I am not sure if midi drums can go anywhere other that the drum track, but it's worth looking into
BIAB for Windows Version 2019 (643) Windows 10 (1909)
Close but no cigar. I followed this to completion and turned the Green "Drums" into a Green "=Drums". I think that indicates a substitution is being invoked? But I don't believe that gives me a midi track.
Thank you for everyone who replied. It seems there is no straight forward approach. Simple "force drums to midi" (turns it yellow) but choosing "Custom Midi style for this track" does something absurd. I can hear midi drums, but when changing these drums to something else (Choose from presets), it changes the name of drums in the mixer, but beat remains the same. Yes, I regenerated. And even if it worked, it seems those presets are only a fraction of midi drums available within MIDI styles.
Stylemaker works with some amount of success, but it is very awkward.
With so many MIDI styles in BIAB I was almost certain there is an easy way to do this. Similar to picking RT/RD. I guess I was wrong. Ideally, there should be a unified track picker.... RT, RD, MIDI and Loops... with previews.
If you do what Pipeline shows and then disable the auto-substitute MIDIdrums for REALdrums that Videotrack shows, it should work.
After changing to MIDIdrums as Pipeline suggested, I right-clicked on the Drum track and selected "Force Drums to MIDI".
Regards, Noel
Yes, I disabled substitutions and the selected "Force Drums to MIDI" exactly as you suggested and that appears to work. I also inserted a midi piano on the empty piano track. So this may be the way. However, I did not really listen to what I made... But that really was not too hard to do.
I should be able to make up my own Real(MIDI)Drums with a midi midi file, the same with UserTrackDrums, but I can't so I made a tutorial Jamstix, EZDrummer..etc Fitting Drum Tracks Quickly to BB Chord Sheet If we could do that users could upload and share their midi drum styles that would just generate up directly in Biab/RB without having to generate in Reaper then import into Biab/RB.
Though I could make one up using AutoHotKey that will read the SGU MGU same as Open Biab SGU MGU etc.. in REAPER , that will then just read the Part Markers and create the midi drum file that you just Drag n Drop into BB/RB.
Pipeline, True... I even tried a drum machine VST on "Through" mixer track in BIAB with some success. BIAB sends tempo and start/stop sync, so that kind of works. But drum machine is a drum machine, I am not a drummer, so I wouldn't know how to program groves or such.
This topic is about mainly about Midi styles that are already in BIAB.. They make up about 40% of all styles available. I think user should be able to pull individual tracks of these to mixer channels without acrobatics, same way you choose RT.
Or even better, be able to work with keyboard styles within BIAB, there are great many available with all the variations, breaks, endings already in place, they will sound as good as your synth.
Try C:\Data\CustomMIDIPResets.txt maybe you can add them manually ? maybe it references C:\Data\BBW.LST ? you can open in a text editor and have a look. If I get time I'll look more into it.

P.S. Is this you, Gettin' Old (all BB)?
That was just one of the examples using all BB Tracks that I posted in the forum, they were mixed up for someone, they were using Magix MusicMaker, I said forget Magix. They would not have got on CMT with Magix. If Life's Short use Band In A Box
I tried it but even when you change it to midi drums and then a Custom Preset it still plays the drums of the current style. If you select a Mel or Sol track and add a custom drum preset to those I get nothing. If i change anther track to a custom midi preset other than Drums it works.
I added a preset to CustomMIDIPResets.txt Bass, Fast Bebop Jazz A-B Sw 300 Any$Bop_300$bass$33 Drums, Fast Bebop Jazz A-B Sw 300 Any$Bop_300$drums$41 and it will show up in the preset list, I can get it to generate the Bebop Bass in another track.
The BB on the left is set to use the DOCWAT2 Drums from the style on the right BB, BUT the BB on the left is generating up the drums from the current style CRIMSONS. Maybe there's something I'm missing ??? I'll let you guys work it out.. Full Screen
Pipeline, please do not waste time on this. Even if you find a simpler way, it would not be an easy one, because there would be no option to audition these midi phrases. I think the only place you can audition these midi styles are through stylepicker. Would make sense to be able just to copy individual tracks from picker directly to mixer track. However, I would prefer a universal tabbed picker for ALL tracks: RT/RD/Midi/Loops. ...and be able to choose these style midi lines right from mixer. I think it is a solid candidate for wishlist.
rusty. heres what i did. 1. i froze the traks in my original style. 2. then deleted the drum rt and then forced midi on drum trak. 3. now heres where it gets tricky. i loaded midi style i liked , BUT i had to reset tempo to my tempo in step one if tempo of midi style was different. my frozzed RT's were still there , but had turned yellow , BUT WERE STILL PLAYING BACK NOW WITH THE MIDI DRUM. its sorta tricky. the KEY i found is to freeze the traks you want in the original style.
frankly what i do in these cases is have 2 biab files. one for each style, and export to my multitrack software and sort it out there. so lets say my 2 styles are,, rusty rock full of RT's and rusty rock midi full of midi style. i would export the rusty rock RT's to the daw as individual traks. then rusty rok midi to my daw. then sort it out in my daw , for example useing the jamstix plug in if i had it on the midi drum trak in the daw.
