Can you test out Reaper? It does sound like on the systems with this problem, Apple software (GarageBand, Logic) can see the AU plugin (DLSMusicDevice), however I am curious if other third party software aside from Band-in-a-Box can. Could you download Reaper to test? You don't need to learn new software, all you need to do is go to the Insert menu | 'Virtual Instrument on New Track' and see if it's listed there.
It would be great if you could provide a screenshot showing the Band-in-a-Box Plugin window (as I did above), and also the Reaper window. Command+shift+4 takes a screenshot. You can attach to your post using the File Manager link.
