Dylan -legend in his own time. Love so many of his songs but all 600 are not hits. I don't like every song Stevie does but she is a prolific songwriter and no slouch. She released an album in 1973 as part of the duo Buckingham Nicks, and was a prominent member of Fleetwood Mac since 1975. Rumours is still one of the best selling albums of all time. Stevie did not begin her solo career until 1981. Her debut album, Bella Donna, reached number one on the US Billboard 200 album chart and is also her best-selling album in the US. Six of her eight studio albums have reached the US top ten.
I will give you Bella Donna. But I will be quick to point out that if you look at the Buckingham Nicks album (which WAS fantastic) it was 90% Buckingham and the rest his girlfriend who only got into Fleetwood Mac because he said "If you want me, you gotta take her." And That has been documented often.
When I see "co-written" by a duo that has one established writer and one "Who is that?" name, I pretty much assume the established writer shared credit as a courtesy. That may be an incorrect assumption, to be sure. But when you look at 2 of "her" hits, "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" and "Leather and Lace", I will never believe that Petty and Henley were not the primary writers and Nicks was added as "Well, okay. You DID sing one side of the duet." I can't stand that voice like a sheep and don't get why people still think she can actually sing. Prince wrote the core of Stand Back. (It's Little Red Corvette if you listen to it closely.)
I have seen her in concert 3 times, and the strength of the show was the quality of the band, not her singing. I saw the same tour 3 times because my work took me around the midwest and I happened to hit cities where she was. That band was 3 keyboard players, 2 guitars and 3 backing singers, one of them her sister in law, who honestly was a better singer. They were very tight, very solid music.
Part of what turns me off about her is that so many female wannabe types jumped on the soapbox about "Yeah!!! Women can raaaaaaawk!!!" Well, lay that on the back of the Wilson sisters, not her. Heart DOES "raaaaaawk!" Anne Wilson is incredible, as is Nancy. I just can't get behind the weird always black clothing and posing on stage.
Sorry to sound harsh and of course your opinion is your opinion and I respect that. I am just more about the steak than the sizzle.
