So, I ordered BIAB 2021 late last week, and yesterday I got the USP shipping notification on it. It'll be here before 9 p.m. tonight.

What I find hysterical is that I live less than 200 miles from Richmond, B.C., where this originated from. I'm a bit south of Seattle and Tacoma in Washington state. However, my little hard drive, instead of just traveling 200 miles or so, took a 4,000 mile trip via Kentucky to get here. I mean, 2000 miles from Richmond to Kentucky, and then another 2,000 miles back to me.
No wonder shipping is so expensive, when you've got to add n the price of fuel for an jet airplane, the crew pay and other stuff, and then to get it back here. Man, that adds up.

I just thought it was funny how that little two pound hard drive had to go all that way just to get to me.

I'm blessed watching God do what He does best. I've had a few rough years, and I'm still not back to where I want to be, but I'm on the way and things are looking far better now than what they were!

Are you sure? I just tracked this, and it went straight from Richmond, BC to Pacific, WA, United States - scheduled for delivery today!
(I'm also going to send you an email about your order - you're getting a small refund!)

Regardless, I'm glad it's making it's way so quickly! It was picked up from our site on Monday around 3pm!

Hi Gary, great to see you back here.

Your point is well taken, though. Most UPS packages I get go to Memphis, then Newburgh NY (which has a regional airport heavily used only by shippers; it's farther from me than the bigger airports of Albany or Hartford), then on to me.

And if I mail a letter to my neighbor across the street, it goes to Albany and back. Even if we both have PO boxes and I mail it at the home post office. No sense.

Yeah, +1 for Callie.

A few years ago I had a music store in Yellville, Arkansas and got a crate dealership. At the time Crate amps where being manufactured in Yellville. UPS could not (would not) pick up my orders and deliver them to me one mile away in Yellville. They had to go to Little Rock and then back to me. The only way I could get around it was to arrange to pick up my orders personally from the factory.

Yes Callie, I AM sure of it. It arrived in Lexington, KY at 0345 local time, and then arrived in for Seattle about 0545. From there, it went out for delivery as 'Pacific, Wa.' It arrived here at 1351, but I have to go pick it up over at the receiving dock, since I was asleep at the time I got here.
I work 0100 to 0930, so I watched it's progress.

Matt,
I've been homeless, still am, kind of. I work in a Transitional Housing Program for Veteran's (of which I was in earlier at a different location), and currently I'm living on campus. I'm on the process of paying off back rent so I can get a place of my own.

I had a little money (never 'extra', it seems) so I upgraded to 2021, and I'm looking forward to what it can do.

Still can't write my own music, but that's okay, there are plenty of 'standards' that I can play with. smile

Glad to see you're still here.

Seemingly illogical on a per mile measure, the shipping is based on the 'Hub' model. Sorting and sub-sorting is done at centralized locations. Imagine the chaos if every item was sorted to its final destination by the pickup person, or at the local post office. Even sorted, the local centers would then need to route their work product to the millions of final locations.

The observation about the overhead costs of air transport is spot on...but each aircraft is at capacity to and from the hub to the regional centers, minimizing marginal costs. If each airplane carried a two pound package only, postage for it would be in the $100,000/each range. That efficiency is even now being exploited in the COVID vaccine distribution.

Federal Express pioneered the Hub system in the early seventies. They flew (mainly) business mail and small packages on a then-unthinkable next day delivery via a fleet of Falcon (like a LearJet) jets, in and out of Memphis; in by 2A, out by 5A, and in trucks at location in the PM at the latest. No one where I worked thought they would last 3 months, and none of us bought into the business, thinking it was stupid to send a package to Memphis to get it to the next town. We ended up working another 30 years to make up for our lack of foresight.
