Hi All,

This is just me and Eddie having fun with some old-school blues.
I can't believe that we've been doing this for nearly nine years now.
When we started, collaborating over some three thousand miles was looked
on as being strange and wonderful, but now it's just what everyone does.
Anyway, this is very much a joint composition. Eddie is singing and played
the horn section on one of his keyboards - he can tell you which one. I played the
guitars and Hammond. The drums started out as Realdrums which Eddie put on,
but which we changed later for our own sampled drums. The OOHs and sax solo are RTs.
We wrote the lyrics together, but Eddie must take the credit (blame?) for the
pun in verse three.

BIG BLACK DOG
I got this big black dog always follows me around
I got this big black dog always follows me around
If I can't shake him off, I'm gonna have to leave this town

I turn my eyes to the heavens and there's a big black cloud
I turn my eyes to the heavens and there's a big black cloud
Well it makes me so dang angry I just wanna scream out loud

Well I've been so downhearted ever since my cow been gone
Well I've been so downhearted ever since my cow been gone
I'll be so udderly lonesome till my cow comes home

As usual, we're grateful to anyone who has the time to give it a listen.
Stay safe,
ROG

The horn parts came from my Ensoniq EPS16 sampler with a sample called LA Horns. It's the sound I blend with a trumpet from the Ensoniq ESQ-1 when I play with the Southside Johnny tribute. IF we ever play again. Covid wiped out 2020 for us like it did for everybody else.

I tried to do my best Bob "The Bear" Hite (Canned Heat) impression on the vocals.

Greg, mine is not only maxed out for RAM but it also has the SCSI kit with the OS on it so I can boot without a floppy. Boots in about 15 seconds. Also have that horn patch in a flashbank so I can load that without a floppy as well. I also use that sampler with a guitar sound that I play through a distortion pedal so when the guitar solos I play rhythm guitar behind him on a sampler, and nobody knows it's not a guitar. I have watched the crowd while the guitar solos and I see people looking around to see where the rhythm guitar is coming from. The total space of the horns and guitar samples is too big for the flashbank though so I have to load that from floppy.

There is a lot to love in this one. ROG, you’ve got that tele talkin. Some really nice blues licks. Great overall sound. Mixed just right for the genre. Eddie, great horn parts and your vocal kills it. You both got it goin on in this one. I love blues so I love this, Tom

Some killer guitar happening here. And the bass & drums provide a great backbone. Sax was awesome. I felt the horn section was missing a high, crisp punch - from trumpet? maybe - just a bit too "mellow".

Good mix. A fun listen.

You know, as I was playing that I thought "Should I MIDI in this synth and do the horns the way I do them in the band? Nah. The trumpet wouldn't add that much." And that almost tinny crispness may have helped. Now I am going to have to head back up there and try it even though the song is already posted. Just to try it.

Yeah, the horns fill lots of space but do it in a very mid mud way.
The drums, to my ears, are REALLY unconvincing...the hihat is the weakest link...not a fab sample.
The drums also seem narrow...the cymbals spread a little as they sizzle but they don't stamp the stereo image as wide.
Cool song and well performed.

Love when you play the blues Rog. Very cool vocal and lyric. Horns were excellent. Reminds me of the Blues Brothers tune. Well done.

ROG & Eddie ...

It's hard to beat this old, straight-n Blues style. And you gentlemen did it good justice. Soper licks and vocal. That sax lead is killer and the horns are terrific. Great sound ... loved it!

Take care and be safe. Best to both of you ...

Alan

Wow!!! I really enjoyed this. Funny thing I wrote a song some time back with the same title.
I believe Winston Churchill coined the black dog phrase.
Loved it.

Hi Greg,
Those EPS horns really show how some of the aging equipment still has a place in the studio.
Many thanks for looking in and for the positive review.
Cheers,
ROG.
