J.J. Cale is one smooth voice and guitar.
If you look at his onstage setup its pretty simple. He sounds the same in the studio so I'm guessing thats a clue.
A shure sm57, a small amp, a little reverb,and just a laid back approach.
As cool as it gets.

Greats like Eric Clapton and Mark Knopfler both have said they wish they could sound like JJ Cale.
In an interview for a joint effort (Road to Escondido i believe) J.J. ribbed Eric saying he finally got his wish to make an Eric Clapton record that sounded like a J.J Cale album, although he needed JJ on the album to do so (paraphrased).

Precious few people on the planet can poke fun at Eric Clapton for his guitar playing.

Either Netflix or Amazon has a recent documentary out on JJ Cale
