I went back to the composition and discovered that the very busy bass line occurs only on the second pass of an embedded repeat, not on repeats of the chorus. If I unfold the song (or actually re-write it without repeats), the bass line stays simple throughout. I've read a lot about folks always unfolding songs instead of using embedded repeats to maximize flexibility, and here is yet another reason to do the same. As a side note, in the original composition with embedded repeats, when I uncheck the "Vary Styles in Middle Choruses", the bass line does in fact stay simple on the chorus repeat, but goes very busy again on the second pass of the embedded repeat.
