Boy, am I having problems with BB02021.

Almost every song in my collection has latency issues on the Soloist & Melody tracks - all MIDI.

And songs that are all MIDI except for the Real Drums are out of Sync with the drums.
Rather than manually trying to adjust every MIDI Soloist & Melody track on almost every song, I'm looking for a universaL setting to hopefully fix the problem.

Is there such a thing?
I'm using BB2021/813, with keyboard and Edirol UM1X and Ketron SD2.

On the MIDI Driver dialog there is a timing adjust you can do. But I’m wondering what changed. Look at the Audio settings. Did that change from ASIO to WAS or MME?

As Matt suggested there is a driver latency adjustment you can try.

Go Ctrl + E to open preferences > then press d to open the MIDI Driver window.

My normal latency setting is 104 but sometimes after an update the value will magically change to 50 which messes everything up.

Once you adjust the setting to your liking go to Options > Save Preferences As ... and save your settings. Then the next time you need them they are easily available.

Thank you Matt, thank you Jim.
Yes, I fiddled with the MIDI driver latency, but when BIAB detects my keyboard a message comes up telling me that the latency should be set to zero. I didn't go any further because the latency on the laptop that has BB2020 on it (and works okay) is set to zero.

This year, as with previous upgrades, I've loaded the new version on top of the current one. Generally the upgrade doesn't make any changes to preferences or settings. However, this year for the first time I purchased the upgrade only on the thumb driver, rather that the full version.
But I can't imagine that would have made any difference.

It wouldn’t be the keyboard that detects the recommended setting; it would be the fact you have a hardware MIDI synth (the Ketron).

Did you try Options, Return to Factory Settings, Most?

Keith,

Are you running your SD2 audio into your computer and trying to match your SD2 audio with Band-in-a-Box audio? Or are you sending Band-in-a-Box audio from the computer into a mixer and the SD2 audio into a mixer and trying to match the SD2 and Band-in-a-Box audio that way?

In either case, try switching your Band-in-a-Box audio driver selection from WAS to ASIO then check if that makes a difference.

If it's the Ketron SD2 that's creating the latency then this is very strange. The SD2 is a hardware device. There should be zero latency.

As Jim asked, does the Audio out of the SD2 connect back to the Audio in of BiaB, or does it go directly to your mixer?

It's a rather complicated setup, but here goes:

The UM1X interface is Y shaped with 2 DINS and 1 USB plug. One DIN goes to MIDI OUT on my keyboard, and the other goes to MIDI IN on the Ketron. The USB goes into the laptop. From the laptop the cable goes into the mixer, and then onto the amp.

Now here's the perplexing thing; I have two laptops, one has BB2020 and the other has BB2021. The BB2020 works perfectly, but if I disconnect the two cables and connect them to the BB2021 computer, the latency happens. Both versions are using the same song files.

I'm currently going through every setting, comparing the values set in BB2020 & BB2021. So far all of the settings are identical.

I feel that it's something very simple, but I'm getting frustrated because I can't find any variations, and I'm getting desperate to use BB021.

And Matt, yes, I've done Return to factory Setting, both "most" and "full"

And guys, I really appreciate you trying to help me out. Thank You.

I have found one setting that is different in the two versions.
Preferences -> Audio-> Offset in mS
The BB2020 (working OK) shows -100 and BB2021 shows 0.
Can this be affecting the latency? Or perhaps this is affecting the Real Tracks (Audio?) and the MIDI tracks are okay?

Can you please check your settings?

Thank you.

Keith,

May I suggest you change the BB2021 computer audio offset in MS setting to something beside zero, save the setting, close Band-in-a-Box and then reopen Band-in-a-Box.

First, open the settings and make sure the new setting took. There may be an issue going on where this setting is not sticking.

Then see if the new setting makes a difference. Latency settings normally can vary widely between computers.

Maybe I'm looking at this the wrong way.
If I change all of the tracks to MIDI instruments, including drums, everything's fine and in sync.

Is it possible that the MIDI instruments are okay, but it's the Real Track instruments that are out of sync?

Is there an adjustment that controls this?

Keith,

It doesn't matter if your thinking audio not syncing to midi or midi not syncing to audio; both ways one is not syncing to the other.

There are two adjustments. MIDI Driver window has Latency adjustment and Audio settings has Soft Synth Latency Adjust ...

The roll over pop up hint for the Soft Synth Latency Adjust ... does say it can be used to adjust the audio to match the output of an external hardware synth.

Well, I've had enough. I'm not a quitter but this has defeated me. I've spent the last 9 days trying to get BB2021 to work properly, but despite all of the help I've received from the forum, I still can't get it to work correctly.
The final straw was when I opened a song and BB had put the soloist track onto a Utility track, and I can't get rid of it.

I play my music for fun and relaxation, but this last week has been neither fun OR relaxing.

I'm going to remove BB2021 from my computer and throw it in the bin (literally), and reinstall BB2020. At least I know that it works properly for me.

I'm not going to invoke my right to claim a refund from PGM; it's not a problem with the program, it's something wrong at my end.

I'll just cut my losses, forego the new features and the Real Instruments and Styles, and make do with what I have from BB2020.

So I guess this means I won't update BIAB at any time in the future.

After 20+ years, it makes me very sad. I love the program and love the Company, and I wish I could continue to use the most updated version.
But I know when I'm beaten.

Cheers to everyone, and thank you for all of your help over the years.

Keith, have PG Music Support been able to assist? They have Live Chat, Telephone Support and email support. If you didn't seek their assistance yet, then that might be a worthwhile step. You could possibly reference this thread.

The problem is unlikely to be the Edirol or the SD2. It may be the way the Thru or Audio channel is set up though.

A further thought before we abandon anything: Which sound do you think lags behind the other?
Does the MIDI output play ahead of the RealTracks, or does the MIDI output lag behind the RealTracks?

Does this happen with playback, or with live input playing on your keyboard, or both?

There's another setting that might assist, and I'm not sure if this has been tried. It relates the the Audio track:

These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
