This "Music as a language" TED Talk has been in my bookmarks for a long time and I listen to it often. Vic is really deep when he gets into this stuff. He once, when asked about theory, said "Theory is the tools. When you drive your car do you have the jack and stuff in the front seat? No. That stuff is in the truck so you can pull them out if you need them. That's what theory is." If you read that and really think about it, that is spot on. I saw him play with Bela Fleck and paid extra to go to a lecture/Q&A earlier in the day and his talk was absolutely spellbinding.
