Keith, we have been talking about MIDI and not audio. What are your Edirol UM1X settings? What OS are you using? Is there a possibility that a Win 10 update messed with the Edirol drivers? If you have the original drivers, or you can get them, it might be wise to install them.
If you are using Win 10 it is possible that the unit is not compatible with it. You stated that it works fine with just MIDI but when you mix MIDI with audio you get problems. A bit rate mismatch can cause those types of problems.
I say the Edirol might not be compatible with Win 10 because the docs say it was for Win 98/XP. I do not know if there has been driver updates so it is compatible with Win 10 so you may want to investigate that.
Don't give up. I have had some weird issues with the latest 2021 also.
I think my wife has started to show the first signs of dementia. She said she can't remember what she ever saw in me!

Keith, Mario makes a good point. Previously, you wrote:

Now here's the perplexing thing; I have two laptops, one has BB2020 and the other has BB2021. The BB2020 works perfectly, but if I disconnect the two cables and connect them to the BB2021 computer, the latency happens. Both versions are using the same song files.
Is the operating system exactly the same on those two laptop computers? What O/S is running? Roland don't list a driver for the Edirol UM1X for Windows 10, and I wonder if a driver was substituted if you have Windows 10 on one of the systems.

Firstly I want to apologise for my rant yesterday; I guess I was just venting my frustration and anger, and I'm sorry.
However, in the cold light of morning, and with a relatively clear head, I read through the posts and something blatently obvious jumped out at me. The laptop with BB2020 (working OK) is Windows 7 and the laptop with BB2021 is Windows 10. Doh! I've had the Edirol UM1X for a long time - probably since XP days - and what you said about updating the drivers makes perfect sense.
I'll poke around and see if I can find driver updates.
Thanks for your help and for your encouragement to keep trying.

Thanks Trev, interesting reading, buy way beyond my capabilities.
Without some manipulation, it's said the Edirol UM-1X does not work with Windows 10.
This is not correct. After my "brainstorm" earlier today, I realised that I've had the Win 10 laptop for a couple of years, and it worked successfully (on Win 10) in BIAB2019 & BB2020. (and still does). Just not BB2021.
I wouldn't imagine that PG Music would have made major changes to the "nerve centre" of BB2021 that would affect latency. And it doesn't appear to have affected anyone else.
So I'm back to square one.
Maybe I'll uninstall BB2021, reinstall BB2020 and then add the BB2021 upgrade.
Perhaps check what driver your UM1X is using and if it shows a compatibility warning.
I am using a Roland UM One with windows 10 with no issues.
I went to Device Manager and checked and found these driver settings. Just type 'Device Manager' on the Windows Search bar at the bottom LH corner of your screen, then navigate to and expand Sound video and game controllers.
Do advise if any item has an adjacent yellow or red exclamation mark. Do advise what driver is being used, similar to what I've shown below.

Oh, and by the way; I have another USB MIDI interface (M-Audio Uno) which I connected.
Same story, same latency.
Which sound do you think lags behind the other? 1: Does the MIDI output play ahead of the RealTracks, or does the MIDI output lag behind the RealTracks?
2: Does this happen with Playback of MIDI, or with live input playing along on your keyboard, or both?
3: Presumably you are using the Keyboard to play MIDI through the Ketron SD2. If so, is there a delay between pressing the note and hearing the sound, separate to anything BiaB is doing, or even if BiaB is not running?

A further thing, Keith. Don't think you're alone with issues of getting the right outputs. I struggle constantly also, with menus that are difficult to understand, functionality that appears to deliver an outcome but doesn't, things that should just work, but don't, and much more. Lots of tolerance and experimentation is needed.
At present, since updating to 2021 I can only get MIDI output from the Mixer Piano Keyboard or the Piano Roll (using the mouse), but no output when the song actually plays. I still cannot work out why. Songs with MIDI SuperTracks that performed OK in 2020 now in 2021 continue with long sustained notes, and no note-off events being delivered, creating an increasing discordant noise until stop has to be pressed.
Many problems with 2021. You are not alone... I understand your frustration.

After I installed BiaB 2021 onto my Internet computer it ran perfectly. I use the motherboard Realtek chip on this computer.
But when I installed 2021 onto my music computer I had terrible latency. 2021 changed my audio interface from my Roland Octa-Capture to the Window's sound chip. It also changed my drivers from MME to WAS. Once I changed back to the Roland all was OK.
Also I have had Window updates change my audio interface from the Roland to RealTek. Adding to Trev's device manager advice be sure to check that Win 10 didn't activate the Realtek sound chip as that can also cause problems if it is on at the same time as external audio interfaces. Deactivate the Realtek if it is on.
Hopefully this will help. Good luck.

Hi Trev, The the MIDI notes are playing BEFORE the Real Insts. But not in all cases ... some lag behind and some are okay.
When I play my keyboard, the notes play in time, they are not latent at all.
I didn't realise that you & Mario are/were having difficulties with the program. I'm sorry to hear that. I can only think that if tech savvy guys like you are having difficulties fixing problems, there's no hope for a dummy like me.
I'll put your tests on the backburner for a while, as I have some interesting news.
I loaded BB2021 onto my Win 7 Laptop, and guess what? Out of the 20 or so songs I tested, that had MIDI Soloist and/or melody included, almost all of them played back perfectly. I made no changes to settings or to hardware. I'll try some more tomorrow before I get too excited.
So I can make the following conclusions: (for my setup) BB2021 has latency problems with my Win 10 computer BB2021 has fewer problems with my Win 7 Computer (only a few so far) BB2019 & BB2020 worked fine on Win 10 computer All of my hardware appears to be working correctly
Without jumping to conclusions, (and with the problems that you & Mario had) could there be issues between BB2021 & Windows 10? Although I'm sure the PGM staff & the Beta testers used the program on Win 10 computers.
Or are different settings in BIAB21 required for Win10 as they were for Win 7?
You should try 2020 on the same computer, and run it from the same folder as your 2021 version, and also make sure you are running bbw64.exe in each case. This would allow comparing apples to apples, since there are so many variables to consider with your different laptops. You don't need to 'uninstall' and reinstall the program each time - keep the 2020 .exe in the folder and rename it (bbw2020exe for example). It would be interesting to determine whether or not there is a difference, with the same settings and setup...
