Hello, I am rather new at trying to record anything using a PC so hopefully this is not a real dumb question.
I purchased a microphone and have a Focusrite USB interface operational.
I have installed Audacity. It can record the microphone nicely.
But how do I record Band in a Box at the same time? I was hoping directly, without another microphone.
Is this where a DAW comes in or what do I need to do?
Presumably you want to record into Audacity? You may be able to do this by selecting the computers Speakers as the recording device. Then Audacity will pick up both BiaB and the microphone. There are other ways, but I think this is what you are looking to achieve.
BIAB & RB2025 Win.(Audiophile), Sonar Platinum, Cakewalk by Bandlab, Izotope Prod.Bundle, Roland RD-1000, Synthogy Ivory, Kontakt, Focusrite 18i20, KetronSD2, NS40M Monitors, Pioneer Active Monitors, AKG K271 Studio H'phones
Can you just record in Biab then add some fx to your vocal recording then save to wav in Biab. Or if you don't need the chord sheet save the Biab song to wav, drop it into Audacity then set it to record the microphone. Or if you upload your SGU I will convert it to Audacity Labels (chord markers) this will give you the chords in Audacity.
why record into audacity? you can record your voice in BIAB or RB.
Yes, this is why I mentioned: "There are other ways, but I think this is what you are looking to achieve" when Audacity was introduced into the discussion.

Hmm. where should I look to get more savvy on recording stuff properly and what is required etc?
Audacity seemed like a good start but I probably need to test the waters otherwise as well. I do not know what I do not know so can't ask more specific.
I am basically still where I was 30 years ago with recording methods. And that was a mixer and tape recorder.

As the others have said, trial and error is the way to learn this stuff.
I do all my recording in a DAW such as Audacity. (I use Reaper.)
You don't need Audacity to record BIAB. It's possible to export the BIAB backing as an audio file and then import it into Audacity. That file goes on one track. Then the vocals can be recorded on another track.
When you get more experienced, it's also possible to export each individual track of BIAB and load them in Audacity. This allows for fine control over mixing.
Thank you everyone, I have managed to record audio into Band in Box directly.
It has a few issues such as the time from hitting record to actual start is real short. My footpedal does not work to trigger that since it sends re-generate/play (F4?). So I scramble to run, pick up the instrument and start on time.
Secondly, there may be a bit of a lag. I am not sure 100% whether we play like that or whether it is the recording.
Thirdly, the mic picks up BIAB through the speakers as well.
It was just a fun test. Sounds terrible, ha.
I will experiment with Audacity tonight. One problem will be starting and stopping everything on a single computer.

Rather than moving BiaB files to audacity, try save into the BiaB song file and open them directly in Realband and then add vocals.
HP Win 11 12 gig ram, Mac mini with 16 gig of ram, BiaB 2025, Realband, Reaper 7, Harrison Mixbus 9 32c , Melodyne 5 editor, Presonus Audiobox 1818VSL, Presonus control app.
save the song in BIAB, and then close it. the suggestion is to open the BIAB file in RealBand. it opens BIAB files and is - for many of us - more transparent and easier to use than BIAB for recording.
