Okay, so I've got a funk track that has MIDI files included. It's =JAMM_B.STY Med Tempo Funk Jammin' style. It seems to play a Real Drums track with a Bass Real Track, with nothing else. I like the sound, want to add some other sounds.
I right-click on the Guitar->Select Custom MIDI File for this track-->[27 Jazz Electric Guitar(=JAMM_B.STY)]. Now I've got a cool rhythm guitar. I'd like to keep the rhythms generated from the MIDI track, but want a different guitar sound.
Right-click on Guitar->Select MIDI Instrument (Patch)-->Select Higher Bank Patch (from .PAT file)...
Pick A-113 Twin Strats. Hit OK. Guitar part changes name to =TinkleBl, but no difference in sound.
What's up with this?

Before we can comment, we need to know what MIDI synth you are using, and which .PAT file. I am assuming you have a hardware MIDI synth like a Roland or Ketron. Otherwise, using a .PAT file is not the answer. Let us know.

Well, that could be part of the problem. I dunt understand how it works. How do I figure that out?

It might indeed. We can help if you tell us what you use for MIDI sound. Don't think you are the first to be confused by this!
For example, assuming it's right, what do you have in Preferences, MIDI Driver, MIDI Output Driver?
Is the DXi box checked, and if so, what is the software synth you are using?
I ask because you are either going to be using a MIDI software synth like TTS or Forte, or a hardware synth like a Roland or Ketron hardware unit. Let's start there, because what you do next depends on that answer.
ps I went to high school near you

In a nutshell a PAT file is to support the Midi synth you use be it hardware or a software DXT or VSTi and enables you to select extra patches that the synth has if any, over and above the normal GM set in banks according to their MSB and LSB.
Therefore it is no good selecting a patch from a pat file that is for another synth that you are not using.

There you go. There is no pat file for the coyote wave table as it is just gen midi. As I said earlier Pat files are for soft or hard synth that have patches over and above GM. I use one I wrote for my Yamaha cpv405 Clavinova as it has around 700 voices /patches including the GM ones. This way I have them all available to me in BIAB as I use my Yamaha as an external synth. This means all my BIAB midi tracks get played by my Clavinover.
Another way to say this is that you have one patch for electric guitar in the Coyote WT. You would need to buy a better MIDI synth to have more (and better) sounds.

funkifized. i'm curious. with that jamm style there are lots of real traks you could use. for example i brought up a very neat funky electric guitar single note wah RT from the realtraks picker. with that jamm style you might try loading various rt's and see what pops out for you. i found a load of neat sounds//RT's for JAMM midi style.
if i can make a suggestion as your new to biab. and things can be overwhelming at times. i did this ages ago. a methodical approach to useing rt's in songs.
1. i took a 3 ring binder, and labelled a new page for each imstrument/rt in bb. 2. 2 columns , rt id no. and how much i liked the sound. there are thousands. i ended up with a lot of pages. but worth it. yes its a lot of work, but very rewarding in the long run.
so,,, when i'm working on a new song, consulting my binder helps me decide which instruments i want to use in a song or demo for fit. PLUS i have all the RT id's at hand so i just enter the id i want on a song in the picker dialog. load it up and away i go. it took me a month to compile going through every single instrument/rt in bb and style, cos there are thousands. but well worth it.
ps seperately in my binder i have a list of styles i like in bb.
have fun and hth. funkymuso.
