Thanks. MuseScore, for those who might not know, reads BIAB SGU and MGU files directly. For BIAB songs in any other notation software, you have to use MIDI or Music XML.

And MuseScore is free!

Possibly the best part for me is the community of users who post music in MuseScore format. Particularly if you are a classical musician (but it's not limited to classical) you can get some great scores there.

Certainly there is some very professional new functionality in the latest version.

I just installed MuseScore 3.6.0. When I open an .SGU file and press play it crashes. Should I have changed a setting. I am new to MuseScore.

Tried to confirm, but I got caught in the crash bug https://musescore.org/en/node/315529

I suspect you may be dealing with this same bug. Best to wait for a patch to fix this.

Here is a fix from the support forum at Musescore:

Reboot Machine, Reinstall Musescore,.... OMG, it just crashed again as I was typing ....

This was after I had dragged and dropped a mgu file successfully. the transfer looked good, but a minute latter - Crash.

Hmmmm...OK Dan. I was just starting to thing that this might be something I'd like to try. Guess I'll hold off for now. Let us know when it's safe to wade in please.

Just downloaded the program after reading this and opened up a few SGU files. All they show are chords and nothing else. Not really something I can use since BIAB already has that ability to show that.

I then tried to open 5 different MGU files. The files load OK but each time I tried to play them, MuseScore crashes immediately.

My verdict for this feature is a big F-.

The support forum says Fix version 3.6.1 is available, but I can't find it..... I suspect the fix is coming very soon. And JC, it gets a lot better than just the chord chart when it is working.

Dan, please keep us posted on this. I would like to update but I don't want to be without a notation program.

Well it no longer crashes. It was apparently a simple fix, just don't drag and drop a file from BAIB. Otherwise my older files work just fine when I open them. I wonder if the problem could be BIAB 2021? What are the chances of that? Also there are no notes in the BIAB file when it is opened, just chords. Here we go again.

OK, so you guys who still have the older version of Musescore, can you double check if BIAB 2021 is behaving with this?

Hi Dan,

I just ran a number of tests using Musescore 3.5.2 and the latest up to date BiaB and Win 10.. Here are my findings:

SGU to Musescore = only chords, no notes
MID to Musescore = only notes, no chords
MXL to Musescore = both notes and chords BUT all string parts were in tabs! That is a function of BiaB.

Also I had a ton of crashes that I never had before. I believe it is a problem with Musescore and the latest Win 10. If time permits I will do more investigation.

This used to work (...last year....). So why don't you think the problem in BIAB 2021?

Quote:
SGU to Musescore = only chords, no notes - That don't sound right, I am sure this worked better in the past.
MID to Musescore = only notes, no chords This does not surprise me
MXL to Musescore = both notes and chords BUT all string parts were in tabs! That is a function of BiaB. This is what I saw with my short time running with the newest Musescore. the results were a mess, with only tab coming over, no notes or chords.

The new fonts look good — really good, actually. They should be usable in Finale and Dorico.

Otherwise, it's still free and worth every penny, IMO.

Dan, SGU to Musescore never worked for me. If it worked for you then then the problem was at my end.

I am more upset about BiaB's XML sending tabs. I want notation.

Here is current message on Forum.

What you are seeing is probably the result of a botched update that was not able to install one file that was in use by another program.

So I am trying again and this is now what I am seeing for a drag and drop midi track from BIAB 2021 to Musescore 3.6.

Is this a mess, or can someone tell me that this is meaningful?

Dan, if you want to send me the mid file I will put it through version 3.5.2 to see if I get the same results.

I get the identical results as you did. The problem must be in the mid file.
