I agree - writing a lyric to pre-existing tracks is the "hardest" for me. But, I think part of that is because most of us grew up writing with a guitar in hand and doing it all at once. I would imagine there are plenty of folks (these days) would are "learning" differently and find top-lining "more natural". And, as you noted, once you do it a few times, it does get easier (but, it's still more challenging that the do-it-all-at-once).
An advantage to top-lining is that melodies tend to be somewhat more interesting (and often catchier).
