I compose Brazilian jazz and often play songs with a baiao rhythm, and am familiar with frevo although those songs usually go by pretty quickly for a trumpet player and tend to have few breaks; the lead lines are more frequently played by accordion. Yes, absolutely, these rhythms are needed for Brazilian songs. I'm not familiar with the other two you cited, xote and ijexá.
