Wow - fascinating! I had no idea about this. Good find!

Reminds me of this video I found a while back demonstrating popular songs that use the Mellotron keyboard.

Thanks for posting this Steve. I didn't know that the Mellotron was tape-based. Seriously? Tape??

Well here's a guy changing the tape in a MelloTron ( turn the volume down unless you speak Japanese)

Really? You didn't know that? It's from 1963 so I couldn't imagine it being anything else.

The best thing I ever saw and had a chance to play with was the Fairlight. A studio here in Cleveland had one and I booked an hour of studio time JUST to be able to play with it. Bill Cavanaugh, who owned the thing (and the studio), met me when my hour was scheduled and asked me "Where's the band?" I told him "It's just me. I booked this hour just to play with the Fairlight." and he laughed and said "Oh hell. Come on in and I'll give you a demo on it and sit there while you use it because you will have questions. No charge."

I actually DID do a quickie 3 minute song demo with the Fairlight and a Linn drum machine. That had to have been around 1983 because the Fairlight came around in 1979 and for a long while they were rather scarce. And the Linn drum machine was in 1982, so it had to have been after that for me to use both of them.

He didn't charge me for the time but I DID buy lunch when we left. That alone should make it clear in my mind when it was because me buying lunch is far more of a memorable event than playing a Fairlight...

Never had a hands on with a Mellotron though I know a guy who has one. Enjoyed the video, though I don't speak Japanese.

Domo arigatou.

With my mentioning the Fairlight, I found this on youtube. It's Keith Emerson doing a demo.interview. If you go in to about 3:20 and listen to the question and answer there, you'll smile.

Nope, I guess I missed that one Eddie. Might be because I was only 12 years old in '63 and didn't get into synths until 1985.

Same age! I just knew of it because of what I saw on TV and heard on the radio. Especially those lads from Liverpool who got into the Mellotron heavily due to George Martin's guiding hand.

I would LOVE to have both a Mellotron and a Fairlight. As well as a Synclavier. And a Linn drum machine.

That comes right after the lottery win.
