Hi, is it possible to omit the chord 5th from a V7 voicing. I have a study piece in progression where sometimes i will play V13, other times V7alt, both of which have a different and potentially clashing 5th. Is it possible to specify a chord in Chord builder to omit the 5th, or perhaps you know of a work around?

I'm trying to deal with this problem in BIAB also, and I'm wondering if it's possible to go into editable notation, write the voicing you want, and save it to the arrangement? I tried that and it didn't save what I had written. So now I'm researching to see what I neglected to do...

Hi

This should be easy enough in midi style tracks.
Just edit out the 5th in editable notation or where ever you like to do your midi editing,
Then freeze the track so that it doesn’t reload from the style.

You can not do this for realtracks, as you only have Audio of the original chords as recorded.
Just my quick thoughts
Mike

Hi Shawn,

I'm not sure if you are aware that BIAB plays chords over various basses. If you aren't, please read on...

It's not possible to tell BIAB to omit the 5th of a chord. What can be done, though, is to use variations of chords over a different bass note.

For example.

In all it's glory, C13 is....

C13 = C E G Bb D F A

The top 4 notes are Bb D F A = Bbmaj7

Thus an approximation of the chord is Bbmaj7/C. This is entered into BIAB just as I've written it and it tells BIAB to play a Bbmaj7 chord over a C bass.

Similarly D F A = Dm so Dm/C might work well enough for you.

Hope this helps.
Noel

Mike, after editing the MIDI notes or voicings into the ones I want, do I just immediately freeze the arrangement, or is there a missing step or two there (like save first)?

Noel, you would never want to play the full "stacked donuts" chord on a 13th unless you raise the 4th to get a 13#11, because the fourth is an avoid note that destabilizes the desired sound. Bbmaj7/C is actually a 13sus, not 13.

Hi Leovigild,

The form that suits my fingers on piano, from the lowest now up, is 7th-3rd-13th (for the chord) and tonic for the bass. These are all the most characteristic notes in the chord.

I posted the above information for Shawn just as an example in case he hasn't been exposed to this kind of BIAB-thinking before.

That said, though...

As I understand theory (and there's always room for me to improve in this area)... The Bbmaj7/C can work if the Bbmaj7 bit is played in root position because that's the correct order of upper notes as the C13 is formed. Provided the bass C then sounds at least a minor 7th lower than Bb in the chord, the notes of the Bbmaj7 component are positioned correctly against the bass. This means that chord sounds as a root position extended C chord. Unfortunately, the chord is missing the third (E) that gives the major-key sound.

Load the style _SNOWDIN.STY (Snowed In Jazz Ballad w/ Horns), type in the below chord progression and have a listen.

F69 | Bbmaj7/G | BbMaj7/C | F69

BbMaj7/G = Gm9
BbMaj7/C = C13 (without the 3rd)

It's always fun playing around with this stuff smile

All the best,
Noel

Hi

Yes sorry freeze the track then save the song
it should load back with the track frozen
Also should add that the offending note could well occur in more than one midi style part / track
Mike

Hey thanks Mike.

Noel, I will listen to that when I get a chance. You're right, Bbmaj7/C will give you a workable dominant 13 (without a 3rd) but if and only if the 5th (F) is omitted from the Bbmaj7. Otherwise, the F will very definitely turn it into a C13sus.

Bbmaj7b5/C will give you a proper dominant 13 (Fb = E)
