Thanks for the listens and comments, friends. There's no substitute for trusted friends having a listen! The reason why songs like this one are often described as 'spirituals is because they certainly do arouse feelings of peace, unearthly stillness, and a sense of the presence of Our Creator in our spirits. Thanks, bluage. When I first entered this field, Beautiful River and Blessed Assurance were two that I'd listened to all my life, but never really heard. Is it not true that the river has an earthly and spirit meaning? When people look down on some of the modern worship songs, I sometimes feel like asking, "Have an idea of what services must have been like in the 1830's?"
