Eternal Midnight

A very slow, edgy guitar instrumental in 3/4 time with a touch of Blues in a cinematic setting.

First, my apologies to those folks who commented on my previous song but to whom I did not reply. There are numerous reason with which I won't bore you. Also, I didn't want to bring to the first page, again, a song that was buried almost three pages deep.

I promise not to write such a long intro narrative in the future. Just wanted to fill in the newer members of why my wife no longer sings and how her medical issues influence some of my writing.

For those interested: Most of the folks who have been members of the forum for a while are aware of my wife's serious medical issues. Briefly for those who are not aware, she is in constant severe pain, even after medication and rest and has numerous other significant medical concerns that can be life-threatening. She has bone spurs in all but two of her vertebrae and needs both hips replaced. Plus she had a massive stroke several years ago. Her health is too fragile for the hip replacements.

She and I were talking about her incessant pain a couple of weeks ago. She takes substantial amounts of pain medication throughout the day, plus fairly heavy doses of Ambien and Tizanidine so she can sleep at night. She also has severe Restless Leg Syndrome that kick her out of bed and onto the floor several times per month. She has injured herself by kicking herself in the chin and and banging her legs against the night table and bed footboard. She always awakens between midnight and 1:00 AM in agonizing pain and requires another dose of pain relievers. She takes 11 pills and two injections in her stomach daily plus two other meds twice daily. When she wakes up around midnight, she calls it her "never-ending midnight nightmare". Thus the genesis of the song title

The drums represent the ever-present physical pain, which spikes several times daily/nightly. The guitar in the verses indicates the near-torturous, chronic pain she lives with until the nightly meds kick in. The more mellow chord pattern of the choruses represent her sleeping hours, in which her discomfort is masked by the meds. The bass equals the perpetual throbbing from her pain in both her head and her body.

I swapped out the indigenous bass and drum tracks for a more dynamic sound. All other instruments are the original RTs in the Song Style. I wrote a mostly new chord pattern. With a little coaching from me, BIAB worked its usual magic.

Certainly the most important thing received from this delivery is the care and awareness of Di's unrelenting pain.

Franky you have captured the realism of that torture in your composition. I wish you didn't need to do that.

Nevertheless, another quality production.

I can sympathise with some of those issues in my wife's continuing problems.
This though, is a pleasant tune with a good mix all round, Al.

Alan, this is so extraordinarily emotional. It's not often listeners can hear the heart of the player, but, man, this tune is dripping with tears. My heart goes out to you both, and I thank you both for your beautiful inspiration.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Man that was excellent on every level! Just amazing that all of that came from BIAB. It reminds me very much of Joe Satriani's slower stuff. And your mix is top notch!

You are both in my prayers always.

Alan, I think VideoTrack has expressed what many will feel listening to this and reading your description! You did such a lovely job putting this together! This exudes deep emotion with the pauses you inserted being so effective in putting into musical form the struggle you both have gone through! My best wishes and prayers for you both! Take care, T

Thank you very much, VT. I appreciate those very kind words for both my wife and the music. She just went to bed a few minutes ago. I'll pass on your words to her - a little after midnight. Again, thank you.

Lawrence,

I'm a big Satriani fan. When I listen to his music I always feel something that makes me think he and Carlos Santana, or maybe even Gary Moore, got together and produced it. So, your comment put a big smile on my face! I appreciate your thoughtfulness and very nice well wishes and prayers for Di. And we wish you the very best in return. please take care ...

Hi Torrey ...

Sometimes it's very difficult to conv ey emotions and thoughts in music in a manner that really says what you feel. I am delighted beyond explanation that you felt what I was trying to say with music. Thank you so very much. And prayers are always appreciated. Wishing you and yours everything good. Take care.

Hi Guys!

The way I composed this was with the intention of conveying a powerful but sad emotion. Captivation, in my opinion, is a description a composer should relish. Thank you so much for that comment. BIAB deserves a lot of the credit for the way this turned out. A craftsman, in all endeavors, is only as good as his tools allow him to be. BIAB is a marvelous tool to convey almost any emotion so superbly in the language of music. BIAB and my guitar are the only tools I have. They allow me to do my best work, however skillful that might be. And the many comments and support of the various Forum members provide the inspiration and emotional environment in which to hone the application of the tools. Many thanks. Wishing you both nothing but the best.

Alan
