I think Noel is pretty accurate with his explanation. Changing to 24 from 16 may add some noise that you can't hear BUT if you do it to enough tracks it may stack things in a similar way to rendering from 24 to 16 without a Dither master & Noise Shaping master in the chain. On rendering from 24 to 16 THIS is an excellent explanation of the hidden pitfall...
