"General Standard". It was a very early, proprietary extension (from Roland) of the General MIDI standard.

The GS layout is very similar to the GM2 now in official use. They both have "higher banks" and therefore many more sounds than the 128 General MIDI ones. GM2 provides for more controllers and other fanciness.

Both are backward compatible with the original GM -- Bank 1 is always the General MIDI bank.
