Herb,

Surely you didn't expect to get a pat on the back for being a no masker and no vaxxer?!

What is it you aren't believing? That people don't agree with you?

Do you remember Chris Farley? He went into rehab 17 times. 17. Then when he finally died from a drug overdose his sheep followers all mourned the "tragedy". Tragedy? Really? He chose to do those drugs. They killed him. At some point you have to point that finger in the right direction.

I'll stop right there and let you draw your own conclusion.

Though I'd like to leave you with this thought. Think about how you'd handle being the reason someone dear to you died from Covid. Spouse, kids, jam mates...

Is it likely? Nope. Is it possible? Yep. All because of some chip on the shoulder attitude about wearing a fricking mask for 6 minutes a day when you are in close proximity. You don't have to have Covid to pass it, the same way you don't have to have the shingles virus to pass it. I got shingles at 50 from a 4 year old kid who was in daycare with a kid who had measles and his irresponsible parents sent him to daycare anyway. So I got shingles from that virus because someone else I didn't even know chose to selfishly defy polite behavior. How is it that people who get shingles vaccine, flu shots, pneumonia shots, refuse THIS vaccine? Because it started during the term of a president who resisted and ended up getting it? Is this some last vestige support for the deposed president?

I was at the VA last week and some old loudmouth type was going on and on to all the people in the waiting room (None of whom asked, by the way, and all were trying to ignore him.) about how "Covid is just like the flu." I walked over and calmly asked him "Have you had Covid?" He said no. I then asked "Then on what do you base that opinion?" Crickets. Then I asked him "Have you ever said 'This tastes like S**T?'" He said yes. I then asked "So by that statement, can I deduce that at some point you have actually EATEN s**t that you know what it tastes like to make that comparison?" Again, crickets. And then I closed with "You should really STFU because you are embarrassing yourself in front of all of us fellow veterans, none of whom care what you think." He moved to a corner of the waiting room where he was alone. AND kept talking. I expect that in the psychiatric area. Not ophthalmology.

Similar in concept to those annoying people who tell you 8 times in a 4 minute conversation that they are vegan...

What shocks me more is that nobody asked for the page I prepared about the savagery that happened in my city with "no witnesses". (The victim is still alive, but it was touch and go.) Police have interviewed him a few times but he continues to say that he was grabbed from behind initially and when the beating started he was struck so fast and often that he can't identify anybody. And the video system "failed (ahem)" at that exact time window. While it started over him refusing to wear his mask, he took the beating he got because he was bullying a young girl, so I can't say that he got stomped within an inch of his life over a mask. THIS time he got caught bullying someone, but that demonstrates a character profile where you know he does it all the time. And that's where I live. Not on a 30 acre estate. I am not only in a city, I am in the 'hood of a city. Rules are different in the city. It's not like Liberty City where Billy lives, but we have similar areas here to avoid after dark.

Plenty of modern western nations manage to avoid mass shootings. And they have even less "god" than we do! They also have far less guns than we do!

And anyway, no one took "god" away! Last time I checked there were churches on every corner just humming along nicely while paying no taxes to support their communities!

I'm not concerned that people disagree with me or my POV. That's all well and good. You have your opinion, and I have mine.

What I'm talking about is the blatant disrespect being displayed here for opposing points of view.

The least we can do here as musicians and friends is to show a little respect for others.

Herb, the post you made, and I say this as one who has had things taken with far different intent than how they were intended, carried a somewhat selfish air of "I'm an ex-marine tough guy Semper Fi and all of you who wear masks are wimps and wusses. I'm a MAN and I won't wear a mask." Well, consider that you also live in a town where the "entering" and "Leaving sign are what, 45 feet apart, vs where most of us who are taking every precaution live. I have never lived in a "we don't even lock our doors" place. I always lived in a "we keep the gun right by the door" places. In fact I have never lived in a "town". Akron is the smallest city I have ever lined in and we are just short of 200,000 people. You mentioned hearing gunfire regularly because people have shooting ranges on their acreage. Most cities don't have acreage, and the gunfire we hear regularly is aimed at people. With population density comes increased awareness of something that IS at epidemic proportions. This isn't "like the flu". This kills people. And all it takes is one cement head in a store without a mask who may be carrying the virus with no symptoms to exponentially infects thousands. So yes, in the city we wear masks. And get vaccinated. Especially as the number of candles on the cake increases. Mine will have 70 3 months from now. I am also diabetic. I hit most of the "likely victims" boxes, so when we are 2 feet apart in a store, put your frickin' mask on and keep your exhausted breath over there.

I have never known you to be confrontational so I am sure that you didn't mean to make a post that could have been interpreted as a raised middle finger, though I see how it could be read that way. As one who has started a lot of those conversations, particularly about the value of theory and the relative merit of writing vs playing only covers, I am quite aware of how thin that line is.

FYI. My hometown. It doesn't show actual numbers, just comparisons with 100 being the norm.

Some opinions don't deserve respect. Sorry, not sorry! When you come to a conversation with a nonsensical position like "I won't wear a mask" and "I ain't gettin' no vaccine" ya gotta expect some push back. And you got some. laugh

Hey John, that's just plain wrong. You can be respectful of all opinions. You don't have to agree, but respect goes a long towards a civil discourse. I respect that that may not be your forte'. And if you are going to quote me, at least take the time to get my quotes correct.

Eddie... I don't know where you got that whole thing about middle fingers and tough marines from. I reread my op several times to see if I could find that vibe in there and i really couldn't. In fact, i believe i mentioned that i replied to the door guy in a kindly manner. "Politely" was the word. Not exactly an attitude on the issue.

Herb,

In most things in life our differences of opinions are rather inconsequential. A pandemic isn't one of those situations.

In a pandemic we either choose to be part of the problem or part of the solution. By your choice to be part of the problem you are putting others and their loved ones at risk.

You can't seriously expect people to be okay with that.

Come on guys...there is no value in becoming argumentative and taking people to task for their point of view.

So you don't care that you are potentially putting the other patrons at risk? Middle finger.

[quote]In other words.... life is good and not much has changed that I noticed.

You didn't have Covid or lose anybody close who did. (I DID lose somebody close.) Things might have "changed" had that happened to you. People in large metro areas have different rules. You have 28 acres. I have .18 acres. I have neighbors 10 feet to my left and right. You worked hard to be able to buy that 28 acres. I will likely die in this house on my .10 acre. That's just the way it is. As much as I have thought about how great it would be to have land in the middle of nowhere, I also don't think I would like living in a place with "the diner", "the bar" and "the theater".

My cousin lived in Key West for 17 years. They used to tell me how going to a Walmart was a 6 hour round trip. Just to check, I opened a map and map and in a 20 mile diameter from my house I have 18 Walmarts. All that means is that I have options. I like the idea of land to shoot, to ATV, to trail ride on a dirt bike... but to do that I would have to be in the boonies. I wouldn't enjoy living in a place where there's no "there" there.

BUT, the shopping type thing is preference. Covid is public health and public safety. It's the (temporary) law where I live. I comply. I went to the Dollar Tree right by my house before. I ran a timer. I was in there for 4:45, and there were 4 other people there. I never got close to anybody but the cashier, but if wearing a mask to contain my exhausted breath kept those 5 people safe from even the remotest of possibilities I would infect them, I am happy to do it out of consideration to them.

My best Covid moment yet has been the azzclown who told me that the vaccine contains a substance that allows the government to track my every move over 5G. That told me 2 things. That the guy has NO idea what 5G actually is, and that he is a moron in general to think that is even possible. This is that guy who believes it when he reads that there are millions of stars in the sky but doesn't believe it when he reads a wet paint sign so he touches the bench. And gets paint on his fingers. (And not shockingly, he plays bass.)

Closing, this was just my initial impression when I read your post. I'll never hold anything personal against you. I mean, I am more likely to get Covid than ever meet you in person anyway being 900 miles away...

Eddie.... Didn't you read my op carefully? I mentioned that i was polite when I spoke to the Walmart greeter. I fail to see a middle finger in being polite. What am I missing here?

Hi Eddie,

My best and funniest Covid moment was seeing a guy alone on a open center console boat in the middle of the Saint Johns river where it is at least a mile wide wearing a mask.

Well...I laugh but perhaps he had a dead body in his boat who had died of Covid-19. Or perhaps he just enjoyed wearing a mask. Perhaps he was fearful that someone was going to fall out of a airplane that had just come from a country like Italy where Covid-19 was rampant and land directly in his boat.

I never gave any consideration until I read your post that he could have been fearful of Covid-19 coming out of his 5G cell signal....well...just saying...lol...if they can track you they can surely send a virus to kill you right?

We need a little humor to lighten up this conversation...just saying.

There is nothing "polite" about refusing to help protect the vulnerable. And in this case that guy is just trying to do his part. If you tried that where I live they would walk you right back out the door!

THAT is the middle finger. This epidemic is funny to you?

Here's the stats from North Carolina. (Which I am SURE you will say are fake and a government conspiracy!)

Not sure I see the humor in 12,000 deaths. If ONE of them could have been prevented by the carrier wearing a mask...

Well, never mind...

Sarcastic politeness is not polite. The Indian scammers who bilk old people out of their life savings are polite too. I talk to them every day. Of course they think they are talking to an old man named Edgar (Edgah, with his New York accent). They are polite, they steal money, and then they laugh at their victims. One guy had a heart attack and died when he lost all his money. The scammers thought it was funny and gathered around the desk to laugh at the man who had just died.

But, as I often do, I digress.

You asked me where I saw the middle finger. It is right in the middle of the "bwahahahahahahahahaha".

I've got to agree with Eddie on that. Intimidating an old Walmart greeter who is just trying to do their job is in no way funny.

The current death toll is around 546,825. Just imagine how many fewer deaths there would have been if everyone just wore a mask and practiced social distancing.

It would have easily been in the thousands, maybe even tens of thousands or more. In case that gets lost in the numbers, we are talking about lives.

Something I think escapes some no maskers attention or thought process is the fact that their actions influences others. Nobody WANTS to wear a mask. When they see other people publicly refusing to wear a mask it makes them consider doing the same. Especially in a place like WV where the no maskers are really prevalent.

Most of them are big burly rednecks. Tough guys. Some are doing it for a political statement and others are doing it because they think it makes them look like a wussy if they wear a mask.

Herb can call it "self righteous" to call out no maskers. I call it socially responsible, self preservation and a desire to end this friggin' pandemic so our lives can get back to normal. It doesn't take a doctor or rocket scientist to know that masks will slow the spread of the virus and save lives.
