I sat in on a Zoom conference with some of my former colleagues from the Health Department and we discussed some of the anger being expressed toward Health Care workers, pro maskers, anti maskers, anti vaccers etc. One of my Psychiatrist friends expressed the opinion that FEAR is the major thing that is driving our angry responses toward each other. We have spent a year watching friends, colleagues, and family members get sick and sometimes die. Some people have a fear of being told what to do. The ANGER comes in because on the one hand, we could come right out and admit that we are afraid, but we are always taught that being afraid is a sign of weakness. Anger on the other hand is seen as a sign of strength, so more and more we are expressing our fears through our anger.

Believe it or not, as counter intuitive as it might seem, anger is expressing a feeling of “I need to be connected and communicate with you”, but instead comes out as “I’m strong and I don’t need you”. There is just a lot of anxiety and depression being manifested as anger now. All human beings need to have connection with others, but we go into anger or attack mode as a way of defending ourselves. When we’re aggressive, we don’t have to show vulnerability to other people.
