A lot of the advice is good but the presenter doesn't understand why some of it works.
Interesting that, while discouraging the use of an SM58 due to sibilance, he's holding a cheap RØDE. Yea, right… one mic was designed for preamp circuitry that's been obsolete for over 50 years while the other is just poorly designed.
So, of course, one needs a De-esser. With the right mics, no, not really except for singers with terrible technique.

So, of course, one needs a De-esser. With the right mics, no, not really except for singers with terrible technique. Rode mics are 'poorly designed'? Really? They are a common mic around here, and people are making some pretty good tracks with them. They aren't a Neumann or Telefunken, but most people that do this as a hobby can't afford to dabble in such esoteric mics. The whole point of the video was how to record tracks without plosives with mic placement and show that you don't need a de-esser by singing across the capsule instead of directly into it. I think that's good advice, and it actually works quite well. Regards, Bob

Rode mics are 'poorly designed'? Really? They are a common mic around here, and people are making some pretty good tracks with them. They aren't a Neumann or Telefunken, but most people that do this as a hobby can't afford to dabble in such esoteric mics. Rode mics are perfectly good, and reasonably well designed for the price. When I was an audio engineering student, I had access to a plethora of mics ranging from cheap to pro. Neumann TLM103 and KM184, Shure SM7B, AEA R92, Audio Technica AT4050, quite a few Advanced Audio mics, Electrovoice RE20, AKG C414 B-ULS, and more. I liked all the above mics, but quite often I'd grab a Rode NT2000 since it was quite clear, open, and predictable. We also had a Rode NTK and a Rode K2, both tube condenser mics, which we (both students and teachers) all thought were at least equal to the list above. Sold quite a few Rode's in my day working at the local music shop, and never had a dud. Can't even remember any refunds on them either... A neat trick is to vertically hold a pencil in front of your mouth just below your nose. This is a great trick, though I prefer to hold the pencil on the mic with a couple elastics. It's best to change the mic position a bit - raise it up and angle it down - but sometimes that's not enough for some singers! I tried that. Kept jamming the pencil in my eye!  They make those giant oversized erasers that stick onto pencils for just this purpose.

We are quite happy with our Rodes NT1 and basic popfilter. It is placed 2' from a quilted runner hanging over a file cabinet  We've used that for seven years and after hundreds of User Showcase reviews no one has mention sibilance/plosives so I guess it works! Bud

Others have headbaskets and capsule designs that make them overly sensitive to sibilance. Yea, that's poor design no matter how many are sold. Mic mod kits and DIY instructions to correct these deficiencies are easy to find. The NT1 and NT1a are particularly known for this. NT1A Mic Mods NT1/1a Mic Mod show that you don't need a de-esser by singing across the capsule instead of directly into it.
Actually, he said you need a de-esser. My comment was on the "need" for de-essers when he was holding two mics particularly known for needing them. Many other mics do not with most singers. One of my favorite mics is my RØDE NT3.

re MICS i think mics are mostly personal preference. ive recorded on everything from mics costing multi k bucks in big studios down to junk and diy mics i made myself out of speakers lol. had interesting results with/vibe/traks with junk stuff. taught me a lot, and i agree with an old carmudgeon engineer i once knew who maintained everything has a sound picture , and can be usefull on a track. i'm no mic expert however. i find a lot of stuff today too "clinical" frankly. forgotten the model, but tried a rode once few years back. didnt crank me up. but thats just me. once i had a 2020at mic, for clean vocs, but it annoyed me when it went on the blink. not worth fixing. ive got an ancient sm57 that, lo and behold, still works grrreat. ive also got an ancient AT mic, that i never used for years; left over from my big rig days, dragged it out one day and it blew me away on a track i did. weird huh ? mr old recording studio carmudgeon was right. keep an open mind on gear sound pictures. the cheap 35 buk isk pearl mics seem to crank a lot of people up on gearslutz. i would get one if i didnt have too much gear already lol. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTI1NKbMdIkfrankly there are so many good mics cheap these days we are all spoilt. anyhoo, as i learnt from an old engineer in a studio years ago. its not just mic choice, its how the audio engineer "conditions" the trak post recording etc etc. i'm still learning after too many years useing mics. best. oldmuso

Where did I say that mics have to be expensive? Plenty of reasonably priced microphones do not have this issue built in.

Again, so what? That is false equivalency nonsense because it has nothing to do with what I wrote. I was referring to RØDE mics in perfectly good working order that are well known for being sibilant.Not duds, not defects, not unhappy customers. And to be clear, I have had a RØDE dud (one of my NT3s) and it was replaced under their 10 year warranty (back when you had to ship them to Australia) and I still have it and it's great. Their customer service is excellent.

I don't disagree with anything in that video — it's pretty good. I was only pointing out the irony of needing a de-esser while holding mics that need a de-esser. So many other mics don't. Please don't tell me that I have to define irony.
