Sounds like teaching someone how to add 2+2=4 using the so called new math.

I'll pass.

I have over my 76 years heard and read quite a lot of gibberish...but that takes the biscuit of being the biggest load of rubbish I have had the misfortune to have read.

I'm glad you agree, WineRider. It seems to be a lot of nonsensical ramblings. The more I read, the more confused I became.

Actually learning music theory is a lot less painful than this so-called method.

On a scale of one to ten I give this a -7362514!

Okay, I took it to the keyboard. It works a lot better in a natural minor key than a major key, b7 b3 b6 2 5 4. I put a b5 grace note on the 4. It doesn't really appeal to me, though. Maybe it would work as a riff somewhere? Oh, just tried it Dorian, with a natural 6. Sounds a little better. Mixolydian is a little weird, with a natural 3, but if you were playing (or singing) first the Dorian and then the Mixo, it would give you emphasis and movement... if you want a tritone (Bb to E) in your melody. Maybe if you were emphasizing chaos or angst in your lyrics... I dunno.

It seems more like a sight-singing exercise than any kind of melody I'd really put into a song. I do notice that it's the order of flats in a key sig when you leave it major.

B E A D G C F (major)
Bb Eb Ab D G C F (natural minor)
Bb Eb A D G C F (Dorian)
Bb E A D G C F (Mixolydian)

Not nearly as entertaining as I had hoped it would be. **rueful smile**

Back in high school, I had 2 different music theory teachers for the 2 years I took music theory class. This class was so popular that there was only 4 students in it. Me and 3 others. Each there for our own reasons. The first year, the teacher was a music teacher with many decades of teaching music. Second year, she had retired and a fresh out of college teacher stepped in. She was knowledgeable in the newer things.

Neither one of them even mentioned such a convoluted way of understanding music.

I'm sure the thing was meant to be a joke. I surely didn't take it seriously--made my eyes cross and I didn't even finish reading it.

The year I had to practice sight-singing every single doggoned day kinda marked me, and now I automatically start doing it when I see any string of numbers (including the confirmation number from paying a bill online, oy). Couldn't resist trying it on this one, but honestly, it's really kinda weird and not my cuppa tea at all.

If you've ever had the chance to see and try to understand common core math..... it's no joke. Someone actually thought that up and thought it was easier than the old school method.

My daughters would ask for help with their math homework.... how hard can 6th grade math be? 10 problems.... slap the numbers on paper.... carry the one... waaa laaa... there's your answer. Nope.... it's not that easy.

It may have been thought up by somebody on the edge of the spectrum. You know, people with Savant syndrome or similar who are verging on genius and relate perfectly to complex things that most can't comprehend. People who can draw a landscape with immense detail after only looking at a scene for a brief moment, or can remember number systems meticulously. Think 'Rain Man'.

the sequence 7362514 represents the diatonic chords in a key [diatonic just means the natural chords that occur in a key....In the key of C, that would be C, d min, e min ,F, G, Amin, Bdim.
each consecutive step of the the scale gets a consecutive number...
The theory nerds will almost instantly note all those numbers in roman
numerals,,,so vii, iii, vi, ii, V, I, IV, with the lower case meaning
minor chords and uppercase are major....it's actually a great shorthand
way of spelling the chords without having to say "minor" , "major", etc

SOOOO....7362514 shows the steps/chords of the key with each consecutive
chord being a "FOURTH" higher - from vii to iii is a fourth (a perfect 4th, for that matter)....and etc - using up all the naturally occurring (diatonic)
chords in a key.

I'm sticking to the way I learned and know intervals. I still think it is easier.

I agree.

This number method must be an offspring of the new math. I don't get that either!
