Hi Leo, This has been discussed a great deal over my couple of years in the forums, here. Unfortunately, the VSC/DXi synth that ships with BIAB works in 32-bit environments only. There's a note about this in FAQ #159 (html link). From the posts that I have read, a number of people who run 64-bit operating systems choose to use the Coyote Forte soft synth that PGMusic sell. The price is very reasonable. If you want to test this out, you can download a full, working trial copy and see what you think of it. From memory, this will give you 30 days use before you need to make a decision. If you get the opportunity, I encourage you to use the search function here on the PGMusic website and search for "VSC DXi 64 bit". I just tried it and got a heap of results. There are some very clever guys here in the forums who have many suggestions regarding suitable soft synths for this OS. Regards, Noel

This is very wrong. I have paid a lot of money for BIAB, but I cannot use it (or very limited) without buying something else. Would be the same as buying a car and paying extra to get the key. BIAB is not cheap (it is good) and it should be complete.
Thanks for the answer by the way. I haven't found a solution besides spending money.
Is there no free solution? Can I buy something outside PG?

SFZ I believe works with 64 bit and it's a free soundfont player.

I can see your point. I am lucky that I asked my system builder to put a 32 bit version of windows 7 on my computer, so the dxi works fine, (though I still get windows 7 message boxes that biab has stopped working once I exit the program)
As regards the coyote forte I have tried it with one of my favourite styles c_cowboy.sty and the dxi sounds far better in my opinion. So I will be sticking with it. I do agree that since BIAb is quite an expensive program if you buy the ultraplus pak that it would be nice if PG would supply a good synth that will run on all OS.

64 bit gets more common and in a few years most will use it. Everybody with 64 bit cannot use BIAB after purchase, because they have to buy something else first. Never seen anything like that before.

There are many options if you care to look. To me the VSC DXi is close to the bottom of the barrel sound wise. Not working with 64 bit is the fault of the Roland VSC not BIAB as the Forte shows. This is clearly stated here: http://www.pgmusic.com/DXinfo.htmThere are some VSTi that do not work with BIAB as we know.

You should be able to use the wavetable synth that comes with windows as a default. Therefore BiaB is still 'usable'. If you want better response and better sounds you will indeed have to invest into a better solution.
One freebie has been mentioned already. I believe there are a couple free VSTi's available, but as usual, you often get what you pay for. For PGMusic to assume your computer has MIDI sounds already is not a stretch. It is standard with Windows, including Win7. If you don't have it, it was removed somehow.
I recently did a search thru the products page (a couple days ago) to see which program 'included' the VSC DXi as part of the program and didn't find it as being described as part of either BiaB or RB. At least the 'find' feature didn't find VSC on those product pages, so I am wondering where the implication that it was part of BiaB is? If this is implied somewhere they should reword it. If you saw people here using it and assumed you could too, well.. that is kind of an 'iffy' area. They should mention the 64 bit issue though..
And yes, 64 bit is the future. But not the most used system right now. Not yet.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

I can understand your frustration, but as has been said, BIAB is quite usable with the MIDI sounds that Windows provides. If you want better sounds, you'll have to invest in that yourself. PGMusic doesn't make MIDI sound sources themselves; they merely resell other companies' offerings.
It would be like me complaining that I bought an expensive new electric guitar and now you tell me I need an amp; or that the little 7-watt throwaway amp they included (which works, but you would never play it publicly) wasn't sufficient, and why didn't they include the big 200-watt amp?
Because sounds are different for everyone. Everyone gets to start with the basic Microsoft provided sounds (as the low-end capability), but then you get to provide your own, better sounds, based on what sounds good to you. Even on the forum here, we'll have arguments that this sound source is great, then someone says it's crap. It's all about which instruments you need, what style of music you are playing, what sound you are looking for, etc.
So, on the web site, there are several opportunities to buy other sounds (such as the Forte DXi or the TTS that comes with Music Creator 5. If PGMusic included those with the purchase of BIAB/RB, then they would just have to add them to the cost anyway. Me, I'm happy to choose what I want. The VSC is an old legacy system that isn't made anymore, so when the Operating System doesn't support it anymore, it's dead in the water and PGMusic can't really fix that. That's the only sound source that was ever included for "free" (although, I imagine part of the cost was actually included in the price of BIAB), but technology just overran it.
It seems that I remember posting that PGMusic might be looking for an alternative, but again, I imagine the cost would be factored into the cost of BIAB, or sold separately. Since they would have to license it from someone else, the cost would be passed onto you.
Probably not the answer you want, but it is what it is.
