I would like to export a BIAB file to a midi file. The standard procedure is quite easy. However, I would like to include the chord symbols in the midi file (i.e. Cmaj8, Fmin7 etc.). There are midi files which contain these symbols. Does anybody know, if this is possible with BIAB midi files as well?

Regards,

tempuser

Hey tempuser,

Welcome to the forums!

Unfortunately, BIAB does not include support for XML, which is the protocal you would need to make a midi file that includes the chord symbols. You might want to head over to the wishlist forum and put in this request. It has been requested many times in the past, but the more requests that are made, the better.

Hope this helps,
Ed

Hi tempuser. I agree with Ed.

One thing you said makes me curious. You stated that "there are MIDI files which contain [chord] symbols." Chord symbols are not part of the MIDI standard. Do you have an example of such a file?

Sometimes a particular software vendor makes proprietary files that contain chord info with MIDI. PG Music does; you can transfer a BIAB file to Real Band, both PG Music products, and preserve the chord information. But XML is the only way I know to export chord info to any other program by another vendor.

It is possible to include lyrics in a MIDI file - I guess it is more properly a karaoke file then, but the standard does allow for it. Perhaps the chord symbols tempuser is referring to have been included as lyrics.

Well, I opened the BIAB generated midi-file on a clavinova from Yamaha (cvp 409 series). There are original Yamaha files which show exactly what I need (a real lead sheet).
The BIAB midi files showed everything, and I could customize them in every way to show bass, melodies piano parts and so on - but no chords.
Now I learn, what I need might be possible with XML-files. Is it possible to export BIAB files to an XML file and then import it to Yamaha cvp?

Thanks for the response,

Gilbert

MusicXML is not MIDI. I think it's doubtful the Yamaha can read an XML file.

Nor is it possible to export XML from BIAB.

Great Wishlist topic.

He is talking about Yamaha's XF midi format. That is how their arrangers follow the chord changes. You can use PSRUTI to get/decipher chords from a midi file.
