So you have the 2009 version, which according to the BIAB 2010 for Mac Purchase Chart would be $159 to upgrade to the 2010 Everything Pak.

I noticed that first time purchase price is $399 for the EverythingPAK, which will jump to $569 after the sale ends.

For the "EverythingPAK" the "Band-in-a-Box 2010 for Macintosh" page says the upgrade from version 2009 isn't $159, which I'd say is high but within reason, but $379, which is absurd. Am I missing or misreading something?

(I'm in pretty much the same position as Thunder, but I've been out of the country for months.)

That's because the sale back in March has ended, so as Igor (Eye-gore) said in "Young Frankenstein", "of course, the rates have gone up!".

Gone up from $159 to $379?? That is completely ridiculous. So much for BiaB.

No, the price didn't go from $159 to $379. The actual price is $379. You can argue whether that's too high or not, but it's up to PGMusic to set their prices. During the sale, however, it went from $379 down to $159, so if you bought during the sale, you saved a bunch. Just like buying anything else on sale. When the sale ended, they put the prices back to where they were before the sale. I always thought that's how it works.

If Musician's Friend or some other store offered a half-price sale on new guitars, would it completely ridiculous for them to go back to the original prices after the sale ends?

I would say to wait until December (or thereabouts), when the next sale rolls around.

You're right: the sale is a red herring (though the analogy with guitar sales is misleading). The problem is that PG Music's prices have gotten way out of line. I can remember them being quite reasonable, many years ago. BiaB is a pretty good tool (though with the Mac version we're still -- or were as of 2009 -- paying for a program that very poorly conforms to Mac standards). But is it as big and complex as Microsoft Word? Is it twice as good as Logic Express? Three times as useful as BBEdit? Certainly not to me.

Hi,

Since you already have the 'songs and lessons', it would be the UltraPlus upgrade ($279) that you would be interested in. This would give you 200-300 more RealTracks than you currently have, depending on exactly which version you have.

True. $280 for an upgrade remains absurd; but I admit that it's better than $380.

Hi, Charles -

There's a new sale going on with the release of 2010.5, which may help out. Check out these links:

Thanks, but that's only from version 2010. Because I've been traveling abroad with a laptop since early March, I'm on version 2009.5.

This points out another problem with PGMusic's pricing policies. It's nice that we're seeing new versions so much faster than in the old days, but if there are two upgrades per year, it's very easy for circumstances to place a user not one but two versions behind the current release -- with a huge premium on the upgrade price.

A couple of comparisons: Finale upgrades (religiously!) once per year. They have good pricing on upgrades from one version back, and only a slight increase for one version before that. Apple's Logic Express costs $200; so does Aperture. Upgrades cost $100. That is what I would call a reasonable policy.

Addendum: let me be more exact about Finale as an example. I just got a notice for an upgrade to Finale 2011 for $150. It turns out it's been a while -- I have Finale 2007. When I feed that info into their website, the upgrade price comes back as $170.

Hi Charles,

The .5 upgrades, like 2009.5 and 2010.5 are absolutely free, you only have to pay if you want to get the new RealTracks.

An upgrade from Band-in-a-Box 2009 (or 2009.5) only costs $69, and it would still work with the 39 sets of RealTracks and 20 sets of RealDrums that you bought last year. The other $210 would be buying you a new hard drive, with 62 more sets of RealTracks, and 9 more sets of RealDrums.

I hope this helps

That does help and is quite interesting.

Whether it's for practice or for recording, these days I almost always use BiaB simply to make jazz rhythm-section MIDI tracks that I can import into Logic. Having BiaB in a "plugin" relation to Logic -- the great new feature of 2010.5 as far as I can tell -- should save me several steps.

For the tracks' instrument sounds, often I use Logic's samples, driven by the BiaB MIDI track, rather than BiaB's own RealTracks. (Am I really missing something as a result?)

Thank you.

Kent, thanks again. I *believe* I can get what I need by ordering the basic upgrade ("Pro") for $69 and the Jazz RealPak Vol 2. I'll try that.

It would be a little easier to figure out if I knew what I actually have, or rather, how it corresponds to the way styles & tracks are sold. As far as I can tell, the files aren't organized on disk with the same names or in the same groups as the listings on the website. Just some kind of text list -- an index -- might be helpful.

These files take (no surprise) a very long time to download, even with a good DSL connection. So a question: what's in the file "Pro RealTracks (3100 MB)"? If it's the same RealTracks that I already had I can save an hour. On the other hand, if there's something new in there, don't I have to run the "RealTracks 1-66 Update Patch" again? (I ran it after it downloaded, in the order of the file listing PG sent me.)

Honestly, it is insane to try to download all the RealTracks.

Do you already have RealTracks 1-66? Then if so running the update patch is a good idea. But if you are upgrading from 2010 to 2010.5, then you probably want to download the Pro RealTracks file.

If you are just dumping the Midi tracks into Logic, you probably don't want ANY RealTracks at all since those are all audio files.

And you can figure out what you have by going to the Midi menu and the bottom item, "What add-ons do I have?"

Mostly I don't need the audio. But sometimes in the past -- especially while traveling -- I've used BiaB for backup on a quick pickup gig. Being able to make a plausible background on the fly for any Real Book tune is handy.

Thanks for pointing out the "add-ons" item -- I never noticed it before!
