I don't know about the Mac version, but on the Windows version, if you want a hold on the last bar(s), then you have to end it with a Rest Chord (single period) that must be different than the chord you are holding. It's been that way for many, many versions and a fix has been requested. My guess is that it's the same for the Mac version as the Windows version.

So you might have C... on bar 48, but then try D. on bar 52. As long as the final Rest Chord is different, it should work. Of course, how long it sustains depends upon which instruments you have selected. A trumpet can hold the note out that long, but a piano is going to decay much sooner.
