If the pitch-shift was to a higher pitch, it is also possible that psychoacoustics has come into play. As a general rule of thumb, the "average" person's hearing is more sensitive to higher pitches than lower pitches. In terms of mixing, this means that the volume of a low pitch needs to be larger (in terms of dB) so that it sounds the same volume as a higher pitch. Thus if you pitch-shift a lower pitch upwards, its volume will probably be such that it makes the sound seem louder by comparison to the other sounds.
