It probably is recording the MIDI
It may also be recording audio because you have that box checked in 'options-preferences-audio' section
'record audio too if track is MIDI'
It was probably asking if you wanted the audio on the next blank track, not the one you had highlited.
If the track is MIDI (not changed to an audio track) it will record the MIDI.
If the track was an audio track, well there's your problem; change it to MIDI.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome
