You need to give the Preference file a name. The "*" is a placeholder, also sometimes called a wildcard, that lets the program start to create a file while also waiting for your input for a file name.

The screen shots below provide an example. In the top screen shot I'm getting ready to assign a name to a Preference file. In the second screen shot I've typed in a name just before saving.
