Got that right! It's called ruining the rock classics.

Here's a different idea for using autotune to improve old recordings.

Instead of taking a sad song and making it better, make it even worse. If some notes are flat, make them a little flatter. Listen to that a few times until it sounds normal. Now listen to the original – voila, sounds great!

Here, on a forum for a product that replaces, enhances, stretches and pitch shifts the work of musicians we find a thread that addresses the enhancing, stretching, shifting of the work of musicians that attracts the ire of folk who use the former but abhor the latter.

Some responses suggest the poster didn't get beyond the video description.

Confusion will be my epitaph as I crawl a cracked and broken path, if we make it we can all sit back and laugh, but I fear, tomorrow, I'll be crying.

The video quite simply and effectively exposed how the program is, mostly, unsuited to the purpose of trying to make real vocals perfect, (whilst expanding on the notion of perfect indirectly), as it & the user ignore certain conventions and natural habits/inflections of performers. Mr. Neely does this with humour, as demonstrated in his sarcastic intro.

Adam opts for the use of the software as an audible effect and demonstrates why/how.

Those of us who overdub, edit, compile and mix are committing a significant faux pas in the view of those adherents of Direct To Disc recording, (no, not direct to HDD!).

Me? I'm a grumpy 64 year old white Anglo Saxon male who uses software to approximate correct pitch when left with my own voice as the tool for the moment. I always hope for a collaborator to do the real thing.

I actually made an adjusted version of the first few seconds of the Beatles' "Don't Bother Me", which has an incredibly flat note sung by George Harrison. I fixed it, just to hear what it would sound like with him perfectly on pitch. Sounded pretty good. Then I deleted the project, consigning this obscenity to the flames of history. But this was OK. I waited 50+ years to hear that, as a loyal fan I earned the right to have that experience just once in my lifetime.

Well done.
He's, in various degrees, flat throughout but repetition validates doesn't it? I can't hear the problem these days.
AND you've not used that moment to self promote or to castigate either.

This has me pondering whether to stop using the auto-tuning/compression/de-esing etc built in to my Voicelive 3 Extreme during live shows. Maybe it kills the feel/uniqueness? But will I sound like sh*$ without it? Academic at the moment I guess!

You are the only one who can answer this when it's yourself.

I was thinking this very thing. I didn't hear much if any difference in the before and after versions.

That's the problem Mike. I can't really hear any difference except in the extreme ones.

Melodyne is an amazing tool, that can do much good or harm, depending on how it's used or musused... I still don't know much about Autotune... I must check it out.

I agree with Adam that this is more of a "feel" kinda thing. I think I noticed the "uncanny valley" the most with Bill Withers, but what I noticed the most is that the "Original" audio is a couple db louder than the Melodyne audio - this isn't a fair comparison because our brains do a funny thing with amplitude where "louder = better".

Jimmy Page's solo on Stairway to Heaven is totally sloppy.

It will be MUCH better when I remix it with a BIAB Real Track that is in tune.

Next, I am moving on to Hendrix.
