My BIAB 2021 has been down since Monday. I've done several support messages with 1st line technical support, follwed their suggestions and sent the requested screenshots. Nothing has worked. Since Wednesday night, I've repeatedly asked for a new hard drive or escalation to a higher level of support without result.

The support folks have no sense of urgency to get my program back up.

Right now, I'm running 2020, which did install from that hard drive. I tried downloanind the program and installing buyt my pc doesn't have the space.

Can I get SOMEONE at PG Music to help me out effectively? I'm even willing to send the affected drive back if I get a prepaid label.

please help.

Hi John,

I'm not quite following your post.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. It sounds like you might have BIAB 2020 on a USB drive is that correct? You have installed that version of BIAB onto your computer's hard drive.

Do you have BIAB 2021 on a USB hard drive?

Have you tried running BIAB directly from the hard drive?

To do this, please try the following and let us know what happens?

1. plug the USB drive into your computer

2. navigate to the \bb folder on the USB drive

3. locate the file BBW.EXE

4. double-click on the file to run it

Regards,
Noel

P.S. I mention the above because it might give you a way of running the program while things are getting sorted out.

I have been running biab 2021 from it's hard drive. It failed on Monday night.

It was able to load but trying to update makes it crash and removes the drive from file explorer.

I loaded 2020 from the old drive because that actually works the way I want it o.

Now saying the 2021 patch is corrupted. re downloading..

updated using the installer, got some sort of read/write error. attempted to update styles after prompt. Now it's not acknowledging styles I had from 5-6 years ago and there's nothing on the styles list.

I want a new hard drive. Looks like Ill have to use 2020 to read my older files.

trying to rebuild the styles list gave me the error "cannot create file "H:\bb\drum\videosfound.txt". The system cannot find the path specified.

I'm tired of wasting time on fixes that don't work.

what do I have to do to get a new hard drive? I'll even send the old one back if you oprovide postage.

Thanks for the extra information.

When you update BIAB, do you use the Update Manager (Under "Help") or do you download the updates and install them manually?

Build 840 is the latest build for BIAB 2021.

What I'd try is....

1. download update #840 manually from the link below.

https://www.pgmusic.com/support_windowsupdates.htm

2. plug in the BIAB 2021 USB drive (but do not start BIAB)

3. doubleclick on the downloaded update file (this can be on your main computer).

4. when the update installation gets to the part where it lists the paths for BIAB, make sure you enter the paths for the USB drive.

For example, if your USB drive is W then you'd have

BIAB in... W:\bb

Realtracks in... W:\bb\Realtracks

Realdrums in ... W:\bb\Drums

The update could take a few minutes to install.

Once the updating is done, see if you can start BIAB 2021 from the USB drive.

Regards,
Noel

will try shortly but not understanding why I'm not getting a hard drive. I've submitted error after error and I'm busy during the day. Unlike PGMusic employees, I don't have unlimited time to deal with this.

part of the problem is that the problem disk. keeps disappearing from file explorer. It should be clear to allthat the disk is the problem.

John , Just to be clear, this forum does not have PG music employees. The forum is for other users. So no one here can authorize a new hard drive to you. Many will have have good advice and I hope they can help you work through it.

could be the disk,
could be the port,
could be pending Windows update or driver port issue.

Did you try plugging it to another USB port? Sometimes there is not enough power to spin external hard drive...
Just some ideas.

John,

Have you tried a different USB cable? Also, have you tried a different USB socket? Either of those could also be the problem.

Regards,
Noel

P.S. I'm off to sleep now. It's 2:00 a.m. here in Australia.

Hello John,

It could be a problem with the USB enclosure. Remove the 2021 disk from the enclosure and put it in an enclosure from a previous BB version (2019 or 2020). Typically there are two little screws at the end with the USB port. Plug it back in and see if it's fixed.

If that doesn't fix it, it could a problem with the disk itself, although that's much less common. You could try running chkdsk and see if it reports any problems.

It is not clear to me from the clues given so far that the only answer is that the drive is defective. Please try the ideas given in the last four posts.

failed because the hard drive dropped out of file explorer when the update was installing.

what does it take to get a replacement drive?

A bad USB cable or port and cause that. A virus or malware can cause that. Something running in the background may cause that. Or a bad drive can cause that. Have you checked the drive for errors yet?

Life is short so make sure you spend as much time as possible on the Internet arguing with strangers.

I know it is not common but I had a bad BIAB drive one year and they sent me a replacement. Another thing to check...they used to send drives that required two power connections and it wouldn't work unless you used their Y cable. Dunno if it is still like that but something to check.

Please check if using a different enclosure solves the problem, as I described earlier. This only takes a couple minutes and I think it will get you up and running.

windows reported errors and then said they fixed it. 2021 is using the same cable (which I got from you) I used on the 2020 drive when I reinstalled it. 2020 is working without any problem.

right now, 2020 is the only working verison I have of BIAB.

May I PLEASE get a solution. I've bought your stuff every year for years. I can't use the last version I bought. It's now been down for 5 days and I'm the only one with any sense of urgency.

you seriously want me to take the drives apart? Nothing good will come of that. And I see no value in taking the 2020 disk apart because it's supporting the only WORKING version I have of BIAB right now.

If you think opening the drive (which is usually a violation of warranty) might solve my problem, seems to me you ought to be sending me a replacement.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
