(This isn't specific to the Mac, but the Mac just happens to be my platform. If there's a more appropriate category I'll post there instead.)

Rather than the standard two-bar ending, I'd like to end one of my songs with all of the tracks playing the final tonic chord in this rhythm:

Similar to ending a song with "cha-cha-cha!"

Assuming I already have the initial eighth note at the beginning of my final measure, is there a simple way to copy that eighth note across all of my tracks and paste it down three times in that rhythm?

Thanks.

Wow, Great question. Here are my thoughts: There are two issues to overcome. you require eighth note resolution and you want it at the end of your song.

Band-in-a-Box allows you to enter four chords to a bar which traditionally means one chord per quarter note. Change the tempo at the bar so two bars of the chord sheet equals 120 BPM. Then for those two bars each chord entry will equal the time of an eighth note. For MIDI that will essentially give you what you want. For RealTracks you'll have to adjust the playback speed to half speed for the two bars.

For the end of the song, forget about using the programmed two bar ending because you can't really change that since the ending is embedded in the style. Instead extend the song length by four, six or even more bars. Program in the ending you want and fill out the rest of the chord sheet with rests.

Hey thanks for the reply Jim!

So if I read this right, I should change the tempo (doubling or maybe even quadrupling it) and make the chords on the last two measures

G,G. G,G | G,G. G.

Sound about right?

I'll need to do a little experimenting. The tempo on the song is actually 80 BPM but it's treated like 160. IIRC I had to do that to accommodate a RealTrack that couldn't handle 160 BPM, which means I might lose that RealTrack if I speed up the tempo, but that's probably the sort of thing I can fix in the mix. I'll also want to make the notes slightly staccato as well. More fun things to play with when I should be doing other things! smile

The way I count it is 1,2,3,4 | 5,6,7,8. With that count in mind I think it should be note, rest, rest, rest | rest, note note, note. Translated to BiaB chord sheet that would be: G...,G.G.G. | G.,G.. G..,G... I think.

Take the track that doesn't work at the correct tempo, freeze it or make it a performance track and then park it on a utility track for safe keeping.

Work on the other tracks at their normal speed. That should make your ending work better when you need to drop to half speed over the two bars.

Also don't forget you need to return to the normal tempo after the two bars.

The timing is tricky so I'm not surprised you want to experiment.

I've got it working!

• I upped the tempo to 320 from 80 for two bars.
• I used this chord format:

G..,G. G..,G.. | G..,G. G.

• And then I returned to 80 and a chord of G. to give me a couple of bars of silence at the end of the song.

Here's what the result sounds like:

Thanks so much for the help! There's still some work to be done on the song, but this brings it a whole lot closer than it was.

Cool news. The ending worked just as you originally said you wanted. As Jed Clampett use to say, "Whee Doggies!"

I'm surprised at the 320 tempo. I'm guessing the ending did not "feel" right at slower speeds, correct?

Correct. Not only were the notes slower, I had a different chord pattern that wasn't giving me the right "cha-cha-cha" feel.
