Three Band in a Box users after Greg Johnson's concert in Davis:

Greg Johnson, David Cuny, and Greg's sax player, who's name I sadly can't recall...

It's about time I finally met Greg in real life, as he's not too far away.

And yes, Greg sounds just as awesome In Real Life.

But I spent most of my time chewing Greg's manager's ear off instead of talking to Greg, and then it was time to go. Next time! cry

I think Greg may be out of town, so I'll just mention a couple things.

The gig was planned some time ago, but they had to scale it back because of COVID. Yes, everyone in the photo was vaccinated, and masks went back on afterwards. laugh

There was a guy in the front seat live streaming it, but I think he was a friend of the sax player's, and since I can't remember his name, my Google-Fu is worthless. cry

The set consisted of Greg on vocals, a local player on tenor sax, and backing tracks from BiaB. Greg sounded pitch-perfect and effortless, despite warning us that some of the songs were at the top of his range.

The set was heavily leaning towards Greg's more jazzy ballad, and the sax was a great choice. He only had an hour rehearsal and he had to figure out where to fit in on songs not envisioned for sax solos, so kudos to him.

Edit: Ooops. It's a jazz album. Of course it was envisioned with sax solos. blush

I know, you gig professionals are saying "He had a whole hour to rehearse?".

There were a couple points where all of us - Greg included - were in suspense as to what the next song the CD player was going to be, but it all went pretty smoothly. It was a bit sad to see a grand piano on the stage with no one playing it, but the guy with an iPad in the back of the room was certainly happy to have a smaller group to mix.

The CD is "Sleepy Sunday", and the track listing is:

  • Sleepy Sunday
  • What Ya Done To Me
  • Your Smile Looks Like Sunshine
  • Winter Leaves
  • When Smokey Plays
  • The Moon Just Seems to Know
  • Lonely Again
  • I Like the night
  • The Right Lane of Life
  • Me and the Moon

I also had a chance to pick up a CD done by Earl C Webb, who's collaborated with Greg, and I believe has been featured on this forum.

I talked a bit with the sax player, who uses BiaB primarily as a tool for practicing. He was definitely interested in joining the forum, as well as picking up an EWI5000.

Greg's manager explained how running a small record company was more a not-for-profit sort of venture, and suggested that I look at lo-fi if I was interested in actually making any money. We also spent time talking about how amazingly prolific and effortlessly musical Greg was.

Finally... that photo convinced me to finally schedule a haircut. grin

Last edited by dcuny; 09/11/21 05:48 PM. Reason: Listened to the CD. Heard lots of sax solos.

Nothing do you don't already know. Lo-fi is getting a lot of plays, and making money is a numbers game. Pick a popular genre, get on the right playlists, and if you get millions of plays you can make a couple thousand a month.

I haven't really listened to the genre much. My daughter describes it as music that sounds like it's a bad remix, but when you search for the original song it was a remix of, you find out that was it.

Makes me wonder if there'll be a market for updated versions of lo-fi hits in a couple years without all the scratches and noise. wink

David,

I have an idea.

Why don't we write and record a bunch of really bad Lo-Fi scratchy songs and you can be the front man.

I will need you to get a lot of facial tattoos and shave your head and change you name to L'il Nasty D but I think we can do this man.

Are you in???

lo-fi is a bit like putting an old record on, and having the scratchy record play the intro of a song for 5 minutes, and then... do it again.

My son, who's hip about these things, showed me this essential video:

You go first. wink

I'm fairly certain you're confusing your genres just a bit.

They don't call this "Off Topic" for nothing! laugh

There also seems to be a big trend in plugins that degrade the pristine sounds that sound designers have spent thousands of hours creating. Personally, I cannot see that it adds anything other than gunk to the mix.

Phil Spector was known for his wall of sound, blending many tracks of musical instruments together to create one background track.

Current Producers use bit crusher plugins and parallel compression to create a modern wall of sound.
