Hey folks,

I am trying to create a segue from one tempo to another using the drummer to slow the speed. I know there are fills. But, how do I get to do a drum fill of about 4 measures long?

There are some trading 4s RealDrums you may try out. Changing speed may be a problem though. You may have better luck using RealBand.

This could be tricky. Biab can handle the tempo change ok but it would have to be a all midi style, no RT's because they're audio. You could try putting a part marker on each of your 4 bars to generate a drum fill and possibly come up with something. Real Band may be best for this because you can probably find a midi file of what you want or something close with a drum part that could work and paste in that section to go along with the rest of your Biab generated midi drum track.

Hi RickeG,

My below thoughts may or may not be of use. They might give you some ideas, though.

SLOWING DOWN
BIAB will slow Realdrums' tempo at each bar (right-click >> bar settings). What I'd do is to reduce the tempo by 10% (say) in each bar. That would mean that each subsequent bar is 10% slower than the previous bar. It is also possible to simply type in a defined tempo (bpm) in each bar.

DRUM FILLS
As you know, part markers give BIAB the cue to play a fill and that this fill occurs in the bar before the part marker. Let's say I want a solo in bars 33, 34, 35, 36. I agree with jazzmammal and I'd try putting an A or B part marker on 34, 35, 36, 37. In each of the 4 bars, you would need to use the ".d" notation to silence all instruments except the drums (e.g. C.d - it wouldn't really matter what the chord was). This might do the job. I suspect that how elaborate the fills are is dependent upon which Realdrums you use. For example, rock beats would probably have more elaborate fills (and thus sound more solo-like) than country beats.

Regards,
Noel

Ok, I have two posts speaking of RB. MIDI would be cool in that I use a VSi drummer when I export into my recording software. If either you could instruct me as to how to insert a drum solo into an existing song, manipulate its tempo so to bridge to the new phrase in the song that would be awesome!

Thanks Noel, I just read your post as I posted this one. I will try your idea. I suppose I could keep regenerating the song (hence the desire to see BIAB regenerate in isolated areas) until I get the feel I want while setting a gradual tempo decrease. I never thought about that. That's a good idea.

Thanks,
RickeG

This is definitely a job for Real Band, Ricky. Can you play some keys and do you have a keyboard controller? If so, in RB set up your drum VSTi and just play the part in midi using your controller. Since it's midi, no problem to set up your tempo to slow down using RB's tempo map. The only problem there is if you already have audio tracks in the project. They won't change tempo, that's why I said earlier this needs to be an all midi project at least until you get that transition done.
As far as inserting an existing drum part into an existing project, that's just cut and paste. What I have done in the past is to use parts from different midi files like drum tracks. I've got a whole library of midi files where the song itself may sound like crap but it has a hot drum or percussion part. Some of them are files where some hot drummer played the drum part live on a midi kit so it sounds very real. I'll copy that part into another project in RB and just cut and paste it in. Since it's midi, the tempo will match automatically and you can easily edit the timing if it's not exactly right. I use Jamstix for the drum sounds and their kits match perfectly with most of the Real Drum tracks. As you've found out, the RD's can't create song specific fills or transistions so you need a new midi part for that. You can also create as many midi drum parts as you have patience for using Biab styles. A Biab drum part using a Jamstix kit can sound pretty good. Put a part marker on every bar for 24 bars or something, click on any empty track, pick a style and let RB generate it in just a second or two, then do another 24 bars using a different style and keep doing that until you hear something that works. That's the beauty of RB, you could fill up 20 tracks with 20 styles like that.
