I know what you mean Misha, and I agree with you about the high EQ.
I don't know if you've used it, but I used the online app called Bandlab to master the final mix.

It gives four or five different mastering options to suit the particular track after you upload it, and I tried them all. They were all an improvement on the unmastered track.
They give quite different results and I decided to go with the one that I thought sounded the best, but maybe I should have
chosen one of the others.
You're quite right though, we all hear music differently and it is a matter of taste.
I suppose that it's a good thing that there are usually tone/EQ controls on our listening devices that can be adjusted to suit our personal preferences.
