I picked up a +++ Wyze Cam v3 +++ from Home Depot for $35.00 US. Their cloud backup service that also includes other options is available for about $25 US per year. I purchased a 32 GB micro SD card and installed it in the camera. The card stores about 5 days of a continuous video stream using the first in - first out over write system. The camera is weather resistant, has a built-in microphone, siren and speaker. The bad is it is USB powered with no internal battery back-up. My car is parked in the street curb. I mounted my camera to the sill of a window adjacent the front door with the picture centered on my car. With the 140 degree view I can see my car, my neighbors across the street and up and down about 30 percent of the street. I have the microphone, speaker and siren turned off. I prefer stealth. It blends in with the window so well my landlord of 20 + years couldn't find it even after I reminded him I have it. I have been flabbergasted at the night time video quality. It's black and white but clear as a bell. When any ambient light is available the video switched to color. I turned off the built-in infrared and strobe lights because they just are not needed.

Probably some idiot just out to destroy something Josie, and you were the nearest and easiest to get to. The best way to avoid is if at all possible is to lock your vehicle up at night.
We had some recent auto break-ins in our neighborhood a month or so ago and while I am not sure of your situation regarding a "garage" in our neighborhood every home has a two car garage. that in most cases are used for storage of junk while 30 - 40K vehicles are left on the apron, and in some cases even on the street. Many had cameras and did indeed get film on the crimes but at night with combined with poor lighting and the culprits wearing hoodies with their faces covered it actually was insufficient evidence for anyone to be charged. But even though we keep both vehicles in our garages (combined may be worth 20K lol) I did install motion sensor lights that when activated light up our front yard like a runway at any large airport, and in some cases might inflict burns right through a hoodie. So what I am saying is if you can't remove your property from the vandal it seems your idea about cameras and "bright" lighting would be the 2nd best action on your part.
Best of luck.

A lot has been said here and good stuff.
I think home security should make a person feel safe in their own home. The amount and type of security measures needed are dependent on the risk that one can assess. I can not really speak to your situation, I can only tell what I have done and why.
I live in a pretty nice gated community and we have not had any issues for several years.
The issue for me and my wife is that very close to where we live is a real ghetto with violent crime in many places around us.
We decided to secure the house to prevent a home invasion. Iron gates, lights, cameras, and a well-trained watchdog. I am well versed in self-defense and train with firearms on a monthly basis. I carry a concealed weapon everywhere I go. I am insured in the unlikely event I need to use it. I have predetermined under what circumstance I would use deadly force. I am not going to use a weapon in defense of the theft of my car for example. Let the insurance company deal with that issue. Only in defense of my life or other's life. It is a huge responsibility to carry a gun around.
After all this, I can sleep at night knowing I have done everything I can to protect my family.
The criminals around here where I live are not afraid of the police. They are armed and there are frequent shoots outs with the police. There are three police officers who live around me and they know me. They understand I support them and they can call on me for help 24/7.
The amount of violent crime has gone up by about forty percent.
I actually feel pretty safe now that I have done everything I can reasonably do to prevent being the victim of crime.
Take care and be safe.
Billy

My dog is part of my family. It would be a very bad idea to shoot my dog. The conversation at my front door would be recorded on video and the police would act on that information as I would call my lawyer and file a restraining order.
We should write a song about the repercussions of killing a man's best friend.
May not be a very pretty song.

Many years ago I was in the US Military. The military taught me how to use both hand and long guns. Similarly my wife was trained by her country's military how to use both hand and long guns.
For some time after I left the military I carried a weapon I purchased while I worked for a security firm. When at home the unloaded and open weapon was stored in a locked safe. The ammunition was stored inside a locked strong box attached to a shelf inside the safe.
I returned home from night school to find my wife and youngest daughter bawling. While sleeping my wife was awakened by noises coming the back of the house. Half asleep she got up, unlocked the safe, removed the weapon, unlocked the strong box, removed the ammunition and loaded the weapon. My wife went toward the back of the house without turning on any lights. She challenged the intruder and in return my daughter screamed. The scream woke my wife up enough for her to realize she almost shot my daughter. That's when I walked in.
The weapon was gone the next day and there have not been any weapons in my house since. Never will be.

...Deb It's a bad day for dogs on the BIAB forum..... Planobilly's 'dog' song.... (keeping the discussion musical) Seriously Deb, I hope you didn't suffer any injuries. In my previous life as both a dog trainer and insurance claims adjuster, I can say that I'm nearly 100% sure the issue was due to people and not the dog. My unsolicited advice is to document the occurrence in writing to the dog's owner. It could possibly save you thousands of dollars if you have an incident with the dog in the future.

Deb, if you got hit by a car, would you blame the car or the driver? If your neighbor is such an irresponsible jerk call the police EVERY time the dog is wandering free. Here in my city dogs have to be either leashed or contained in a fenced yard. A responsible dog owner accepts that law and complies with it. This isn't the country where houses are 4 acres apart. It really makes me angry when people don't know how to care for a dog. Get me started about dogs riding with their head out the car window with no eye protection. 2 dogs ago my dog liked to ride that way. Here's a picture of her. Because I know what I'm doing. People used to laugh and make stupid comments about my dog wearing "sunglasses". I would just look at them and say "Those are safety goggles. An intelligent person would be able to deduce that from context." How would I have felt if she lost her eye because a pebble kicked up knowing that I could have prevented it for 20 bucks? Same logic here. The dog is being a dog. The owner is the idiot here. Call the police.

What Eddie said!
Having said that no animal four-legged or two-legged will be allowed to cause me serious physical harm. I really like animals and dogs in particular but it is stupid not to protect yourself by both physical and legal means.
My dog is trained to eat you alive but he will never be a problem for anyone who does not attack me. He is always on a leash and never allowed to run free in public and is well trained to obey my commands.

Sorry I said anything. Never mind the song, Billy, I have enough going through my mind right now about guns and dogs and death. Sorry, you are not feeling well Mark. Try to relax the best you can and this too will pass. Deal with what you have control over and let the rest slide. Go walk in the sunshine, smell the flowers. There are many good things to focus on in life. Best wishes, Billy

Arlo . easy to install , battery charge lasts about 2 weeks (depending on how much you ask them to do) and are easy to recharge . All vision goes to the cloud ( don't think trail cameras do that but I could be wrong) , good night infa red vision, monitor on your phone when away from your property , will allow you to sound an alarm as well as you can "talk" to the intruder eg The police are on their way. You can start with one camera and add more over time . Arlo will notify you via email when batteries are low . You will have peace of mind knowing that your property is being monitored. It also pays to place them in a conspicuous place as lowlifes tend to case properties beforehand and will avoid places that have security cameras. And finally they are very reasonably priced. Hope the scumbags get the bad karma that they deserve. cheers Gary.

<< if you got hit by a car, would you blame the car or the driver? >>
Illogical analogy. Even if the car was unoccupied (no driver) and rolled down a hill and ran over you, the previous driver of the car is responsible for not properly parking and securing the car. Also, you could be the blame if you walked into traffic without checking for ongoing traffic (ie: Saturday night drunk).
The bigger illogical issue here when related to a dog; Dogs always make decisions, cars never do. That's an unavoidable factor that always has to be considered. Dogs live in our world, not us in theirs. Training replaces the dogs native decisions with decisions we determine so dogs can better survive and exist in our world of rules, not theirs.
<< If your neighbor is such an irresponsible jerk call the police EVERY time the dog is wandering free. >> In many cases, not every neighbor is an irresponsible jerk. At some point it is proper and best to file a police report but that's not the best first choice to address the situation. In my experience, a dog's unwanted freedom is normally a quick, easy fix without any adversity between neighbors.
Even though Deb was 100% right to access the back porch. It's also 100% the dog owners duty to have their control of their dog and 100% of leash and containment laws were on Deb's side. None of that mattered, was known to the dog or factored into that dog's decision to bite.
It's not impossible in a lawsuit that evidence may show a homeowner in a similar situation had inadvertently created such an attractive nuisance to the dog for the Court to find the dog's owner not liable which could cause that homeowner to be liable for the death of the dog.

Maybe a better response, "They're safety goggles. How would I feel if she lost her eye because a pebble hit her, knowing I could have prevented it for $20?"
As a loving and caring dog owner, you've been lucky with two dogs. You would feel the same if that same rock didn't hit her googles but severely hit and damaged her very sensitive and unprotected snout. That's just as likely an occurrence. Your dogs were lucky.

The rest of the story...
Though I was on my porch and just got the backdoor closed, the dog attacked. I started screaming and a neighbor (roofing his house at the time) came down the ladder and stopped the dog.
I was more shaken up than hurt.
He took the dog home to its owner and the woman came over to see how I was doing. The agreement was that she was going to kennel/fence in her yard. Which she did. (I wasn't hurt so I decided calling the cops was going to accomplish nothing.)
Now the dog is chained attached to the OUTSIDE the kennel/fence instead of being placed within the chain link fence. The dog is a 50+ pound mutt and the chain is for a puppy.
My best guess is the dog is going to get loose again or drag his kennel with him. And, you all are right - it is more a human issue than a dog issue.
...Deb
