I have found many references to sites and groups through searches where BIAB songs and files were made freely available, but all of those seem to be very out of date and usually not existing anymore. Are there current groups or sites that provide free exchange of songs and files? I do know that there are sites with songs for sale.
Yes, ASCAP, BMI and others want the royalties collected for copyrighted music. Especially for the songwriter who hasn't had mega-hits, those royalties could be their rent or food.
ASCAP, BMI and others go after people who violate the laws, although it's usually the big-fish in the pond that they go after, they went to me twice.

I paid a lawyer to make sure what I'm doing is legal, and I follow his advice to the letter. That saved me from being fined and/or shut down.
The file sharing Usenet newsgroup was definitely not following the advice my lawyer gave me. I posted some of my legal free samples up there, mostly as promo for my fake disks.
They had 3 groups on Usenet, because there were so many files, and one day, all 3 disappeared. I heard ASCAP got them, but I can't verify that.
But the performing rights organizations are probably the reason why there are not that many sites sharing copyrighted material on the 'net.
IMHO too many people have the attitude that if they don't get caught, they aren't breaking the laws.
Groupsio band in a box users group, biab users group I think you search for. You join that group there is a files section with non copyright violation files. Used to be a yahoo group but yahoo quit that a couple years ago son it was migrated to groupsio.
