I think they're saving that for when they drop Windows 13 next year. No Windows 12, just straight on to 13 for good luck. Sorry, but FAQ #207 forbids computer humor on this site. There's an exception to that rule, specifically in cases where the post is made by someone who's name starts with S and ends with Imon. "from my technical support standpoint we suggest not upgrading to Windows 11 unless your hardware supports it, as there could be many unforeseen issues that could prevent BIAB and other audio apps from working properly." Then you simply plug the Win10 cloned drive back in same as you would do on Mac when things don't work anymore and companies are taking ages to make the app compatible with this week's new OS. Exactly the same as I would do with a Mac, for sure. Most users don't know how to clone their hard drive though - which is definitely something they should learn before installing any OS upgrade!

Well here's the thing - I have an older PC that works great on Win10 but I'm thinking that it won't run Win11. Thus my last BIAB will probably be in 2025 when microshaft does just that and stops support of 10. Question for computer guys - if I DL Win11 and it won't work nicely like in Simon's video, can I backtrack to my Win10?? Bests Ian

Bests Ian Well the current news is Microsoft is easing the restrictions on what will run Windows 11, with the release starting on October 5th and rolled out in waves such as they did with 10. So not all the computers on the planet crash at once if something bad happens. See above about cloning etc. I would do a little research about how to preserve a WIN 10 installation so you can go back. I would imagine it is possible. May have to be a new clean install, all depends on how you approach it and prepare for it. Just don't forget all the stuff you have installed and have everything ready for re-install etc. as required. I get the hate for Microsoft with the shaft comment, but this release will be free as well so not too shafty.

DL Macrium Reflex https://www.macrium.com/reflectfreeThe free version will clone your drive perfectly. I tested it. It is so good I did purchase the next version, however the free version works indefinitely and updates are frequent. You would also need an external HD and a USB to SATA converter: https://www.amazon.com/usb-hard-drive-adapter-Electronics/s?k=usb+to+hard+drive+adapter&rh=n%3A172282 Just keep your cloned HD unplugged from your computer and in a safe place. IMHO everyone should have these items and clone their C drives frequently or at least just prior to making major changes.

Question for computer guys - if I DL Win11 and it won't work nicely like in Simon's video, can I backtrack to my Win10?? Bests Ian Don't worry too much - we'll probably continue to support Windows 10 for quite a while. I mean, we supported Windows XP up to 2020 and still support back to Vista... It's theoretically possible to "Uninstall" Windows 11, provided you install Win11 as an "upgrade" - however, on the computer I was testing BIAB with Win11 on I was not able to get the upgrade to work at all - I ended up having to format the drive (and still had some difficulty after that), so if you have to go the route I went you'd better have a backup! Easiest way to do it - remove your current hard drive, buy another hard drive/SSD (they're practically pennies now), and install Win11 on that. If you need to go back to 10, just swap the drives. Well the current news is Microsoft is easing the restrictions on what will run Windows 11, with the release starting on October 5th and rolled out in waves such as they did with 10. It's still a little early and things still need some coaxing to work cleanly, but BiaB is getting closer and closer to running out-of-the-box on Linux. It'll be worth keeping an eye on it as an alternative to going to Win 11.

I was very grateful to PG for not giving up on XP when (I think) 2019 came out and it wouldnt run. Andrew spent ages with me on Team Viewer until he tracked down the bug and an upissue Build was raised to fix it. My PC has an XP hard drive, a Win7 hard drive with BB2020 on it and a Win10 hard drive with my BB2021 on. I guess one more would make no difference but I'm thinking that maybe upping Win7 to 11 might be an idea instead. What do you think? Bests Ian

Right on! We're still doing that - a recent BB update for Mac didn't work on Snow Leopard (which is from 2009) so we made a new patch to continue supporting Snow Leopard. It can make things a bit difficult though, as supporting older OS'es can sometimes cause issues on the new OS'es, so at some point support has to be dropped for the sake of progress. We just try and prolong that as much as we can. As for your question, it depends on how much use Win7 gets. If you don't use it much, then it might be worth losing in favour of Win11.

This increasing trend of Microsoft's to make new version of the OS work only on newer hardware and older versions of the OS only to run on older hardware is becoming a bit of an issue for those of us who still have to support applications back to Win95.
The best workaround I've found so far is to run the older Windows in a virtual machine, usually VirtualBox. It's quite feasible to run older OSs in a VirtualBox on the newer hardware. I'm not so confident about newer OSs in a VirtualBox on older hardware as I've not tried that.
FWIW, I work mostly (90%) on Linux and run other OSs in VirtualBoxes under Linux, whilst a colleague runs Windows10 and runs older Windows and Linux in VirtualBoxes under Win10. He still has to support an application on Win3.11-embedded.
In Windows under Linux, there are complications with USB sharing, which is a nuisance with BiaB and also with some versions of DirectX. I don't know what limitations there are running in a VirtualBox hosted by Windows because I've never done it.
When I was forced to change my Win7 on this machine to Win10, I discovered that MS offered the free upgrade from Win7/8/8.1 for many months after the official deadline. They _may_ do that again.

I'm not so confident about newer OSs in a VirtualBox on older hardware as I've not tried that. In some cases there are issues doing that, as the OS may require some specific CPU instruction sets (SSSE, MMX, etc) and I don't believe VirtualBox emulates those instructions (and if it did they would be very slow). If the hardware is capable of running the guest OS, I don't think it's an issue for the guest to be a newer OS than the host. When I was forced to change my Win7 on this machine to Win10, I discovered that MS offered the free upgrade from Win7/8/8.1 for many months after the official deadline. They _may_ do that again. Many sources on the internet believe that Microsoft will continue this, however nothing is official.

I can confirm, yes.. Having a valid license of Windows 10 Pro (upgraded a few years back from 8.1), I was able to upgrade to 11 Pro at no cost.

Upgrade went fine for me. Every single piece of software I own and hardware I own is working perfectly, actually better in some cases!

Everything but my printer is working great with Windows 11. And, if I blow past the printer issue it still prints. All is good!

Hi, I bought BiaB21 last year, installed it but I didn't use my computer since (health issues). Still on Win7... Do u think that it could be a problem to stick with Win7 in order to run BiaB22 ? Before I can rerun my PC, should I make any fix before buying the next release ? Thanks PS: I didn't upgrade to win10 because of soundcard drivers unavailability...

Drivers stalled many of us from moving to Windows 10, but only at first in most cases.
We should know in about a month what the minimum requirements are for BIAB 2022.
BIAB 2025 Win Audiophile. Software: Studio One 7 Pro, Swam horns, Acoustica-7, Notion 6, Song Master Pro, Win 11 Home. Hardware: Intel i9, 32 Gb; Roland Integra-7, Presonus 192 & Faderport 8, Royer 121, Adam Sub8 & Neumann 120 monitors.

So far I have not heard anything about dropping support for Windows 7 - we still supported Windows XP up until last year. That said, it is probably best if you update your operating system, as Windows 7 has not received any security updates since early 2020.

Microsoft extends application compatibility promise to Windows 11 By Mike Adams Published Oct 04 2021 01:12 PM 4,855 Views
One of the most important questions our customers ask when upgrading their operating systems or making device changes is “will our apps work”? This has been true for decades and can cause hesitancy in starting the upgrade journey. For this reason, Microsoft has invested heavily in application compatibility and services to help our customers on this journey. In fact, we made application compatibility a core tenet of Windows 10, and we continue that commitment in Windows 11.
Apple is the exact opposite for application support.

Try as I might, I can't get my HP printer to work on Windows 10. Microsoft point me first to their extended printer drivers, then to HP; HP offer all sorts of tools/diagnostics/driver-installers, but most efforts fail even to find the printer, much less make it work. I guess they all want me to buy a new printer, but the printer works just fine. I just print everything from Linux.

Gordon,
Have you tried removing your installed HP drivers and then connecting the printer so Windows uses the operating system default drivers?
