Herb Ellis was featured on Andre Previn's jazz album "My Fair Lady" in the 60's. Having sung the score in high school choir I was intimately familiar with all aspects of all the tunes, and having been noodling on the piano for a few years, I could pick out the melodies and most chords. At that time I knew I should be liking jazz, but just didn't get it. When I got my hands on this album and listened to the creative "rewriting" of the tunes, and the knockout soloing by Herb and Andre, I "got it" and nothing has been the same since. Herb Ellis on my mind whenever I think of my roots in music.
