He did a lot to prove that 'minority' and under-privileged kids can do as well or better than the upper-crust, ivy league crowd. And he did it without all of the money that the rich districts have.

This is just another example that no race or ethnic group has any monopoly on intelligence and creativity. It's an important lesson that we all need to understand and remember. It's the culture, in a broad way, and personal effort that really determines how well people do. It's certainly easier if you come from wealth and privilege, but you can persevere and accomplish a lot regardless of your personal background.

Also, I really like Edward James Olmos as an actor. He's great.
